Open NAT Type & Mobile Hotspots - A Solution From AT&T

 Gaming on a Hotspot

Open NAT Type - How to Open UPnP

If you are here, you are wondering how to open the NAT (network address translation) on your Hotspot. Unfortunately, most mobile Hotspots do not have the ability to open the NAT due to software limitations.

Not to worry, we have a solution! The AT&T Nighthawk Hotspot Router does allow you to open the NAT. Check out the instructions below to access UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) settings.

Want to get one? Order the AT&T Nighthawk Hotspot Router today.

How to open UPnP

  1. From a computer that is connected to the Nighthawk router, launch a web browser.
  2. To view the mobile router Wi-Fi network name, press the router Power button to navigate through screens until the Wi-Fi network name (SSID) displays.
  3. Enter http://attwifimanager in the web browser.
  4. A login page displays; enter the administrator login password.
  5. The dashboard displays; select Settings > Router > Basic.
  6. Turn on UPnP.
  7. Open ports for your game (You may need to search for them online)

Note: At this time, the Nighthawk is the only Hotspot that allows NAT configuring. If you have another HotSpot, there are no settings or updates AT&T can perform to change this at it is a limitation with the HotSpot itself. AT&T is unable to swap out a HotSpot for the Nighthawk.

Hi all,

I'm looking into this. You may need to perform a bit extra and open up ports in the Nighthawk for the specific game you are playing once UPnP is turned on.

We do not have those ports as they are specific to that game so you may need to do some searching online.

If the above does not work, come back and reply here. I will be monitoring this thread for a bit.

I have an Explore Unite which also has the option to "turn on UPnp", but it does nothing to change my STRICT NAT type. Why would the Nighthawk be an different?

Weird how no one who actually owns one can verify open nat. The settings are there but they don't seem to actually do anything. Sucks because i bought the thing for gaming based on this article. Not thrilled.

I don’t understand what “most mobile Hotspots do not have the ability to open the NAT due to software limitations” means?  Are you trying to say at&t has software limitations?  Because I know for a fact you can get an open NAT on most phones. I had an open NAT on my LG G3 (June 2014), LG G6 (February 2017) and various iphones through Verizon. However, I switched to at&t and now have the LG V60 and can NOT get open NAT. Whereas my Verizon V60 DID have an open NAT?

I have an ATT MF279 Router currently with LTE service and can only get Nat 3 on my PS4. If I purchase this router Nighthawk M1, I CAN reconfigure to get Nat 2? Is this correct. Just wanting to clarify, because I've still seen comments that they were unable to do it.

There is no way to get off Nat 3 with ATT. I've tried this router and spent hours and hours trying everything else. I dont know why they tell people this works. Sorry everyone. Contemplate paying the cable company to run cable to your neighborhood.

Bad article is a lie UPnP does nothing to the NAT on the nighthawk common ATT is 2020 we need an update on this matter and while you at it include a speedtest into the firmware to better troubleshoot connectivity.
