some mysterious downloads everyday every 3 hours

Hi,

I have 4 iphones on $160 plan. We rarely use 4G data however in all 4 phones everyday every 3 hours some data gets downloaded.

On 3 phones, it is rather small but on one phone it is relatively high. For example, in 15 days one phone used up 1.8 gb whereas the other 3 used 0.3 gb.

I checked iphone settings and they seem to be right. Who is downloading this data everyday every 3 hours?

Is it ATT?

,

By chance are you all using iMessenger?  if so , this could be where the data usage is coming from. imessenger will use data instead of text messenging. As for the  updating every 3 hours.  At&t doesn't do live, up to the minute ,  data updates and this is why you see the data change every 3 hours. I hope that this little bit of information helps.

With all the auto updates that are automaticly running on the iphone it could be anything, facebook, twitter, itunes, icloud backup to name a few that are automaticly on the phone, not to mention any apps that you have installed.

Thanks for the replies. But, I think I was not clear in my mail. I use iMessage but that is not the issue. Also,

I have bluetooth, cellular data , personal hotspot all off in iPhone. But we still get downloads every 3 hours.

I am pasting usage details for two of our phones but it happens in all 4.

I am still confused.

Thanks. Any help will be appreciated.

In theory, I would think it shouldn't be possible if cell data is off.

Feel free to get a second opinion, by using an app like 'My data manager"

In Settings -> General, it'll show you which apps/services have been using your data going back a ways.
If you 'reset statistics' in there, you can start it over. If you do that, the phone or the app just might tell you where that data is going.

Thank you. I am also dumbfounded that data downloads happen with celluar data off.

I am double checking this by having cellura data off in one iphone and on on the other.

I have Data Manager but that just gives summary, graph etc in version 4.0. It does not show any detailed app usage. I will look at that too.

I am doing " reset statistics"  and will check on that later.

Thank you and I will report.

take a look at Data Usage by Onavo on the Itunes store. Read the terms of service becasue they utilize a unique way of saving spave on the phone

I may have figured out the 3 hour increment mystery.

I was helping a customer with their online account, and I noticed it say

'Due to Mobileshare plan, data usage may display in 3 hour increments' !?!

I don't recall seeing that ever before, and that won't answer the mystery as to what or why there data usage, but it might explain why it's so evenly spaced.

Hi,

Thanks for all the replies. I took people's suggestions and this is what I know and I am happy with the outcome.

1. As expected, if I turn off cellular data, data does not get downloaded. I previously took my 17 year old son's word for it but then I turned off cellular data on my iPhone and it did not download the data until I turned it on.

2. What I was worried about, that in one iPhone, data download was 10 times more than all the other three.

I deleted the iCloud backup for that iPhone and after that the problem seems to have gone away. His data downdowload is on par with the other three.

3. I still have every 3 hour download, but as one writes that ATT does this in 3 hour increments. Since these downloads are miniscule, for now I am satisfied.

4. I think all the replies should get marked as solution.

Thanks and Regards,

Sankar

You get 10Gb of data on that plan so why would you turn off your icloud backup? That's just asking for trouble.
