invalid number error

I'm getting an error with one of my contacts telling me the number is invalid. They can send messages to me but I can't reply to them at all. I have a galaxy s5 active and have tried deleting all the messages and number in contacts and logs. I've even tried to reset the phone to factory defaults and I'm still getting the error. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi @bushwhacker781

Thank you for getting to us through AT&T Community Forums! We are sorry to hear that you are getting an error when trying to send out a text message to your friend! I can definitely relate, I know text messaging is my main form of communication! Let’s try some possible troubleshooting and get this back up and running for you!

Are you only having the error message with that one contact? Any changes to the account or device besides the factory reset that was done?

A few things we recommend looking into on the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active are:

  1. Verify the correct format of the wireless number or email address is being used when trying to send a message. For domestic messages, use the 10-digit wireless number which is 1, area code (3 digits), and phone number (7 digits). When sending a message to an email address, ensure you are using the correct email address format.
  2. If you recently switched from an Apple iPhone to the S5 Active, you will need to deregister the iMessages. You can click Deregister iMessage through the Apple website.
  3. Restart the device. Turn the device off > Leave powered off for 10-15 seconds > Turn on > Wait 2 minutes to ensure you have signal on the device > Send the word TEST to the number 151, if working, you should receive an auto reply.
  4. Check your current software version on your Samsung Galaxy S5 Active. Make sure the device is running the latest version.

Some customers have successfully corrected the invalid number error message by disabling the Visual Voicemail application. It is absolutely worth the try!

  1. Tap Settings.
  2. Tap General (if phone has this top menu option, if not ignore).
  3. Tap Application Manager.
  4. Tap All.
  5. Tap Visual Voicemail.
  6. Tap Clear Data (removes the VVM profile on the device).
  7. Tap Turn off.
  8. Go to Play Store and download AT&T VVM App.

For additional troubleshooting steps and tips, you can click on AT&T Troubleshoot & Resolve. Once on that website, you might need to change the device in the upper left corner. You will then select Messaging under the Select a Service-Related Issue column.

Hope this helps! Let us know if you have any further questions! Thank you for choosing AT&T for your wireless services!
