Wifi Hotspot and Data usage

I have WiFi Hotspot on my smartphone with the understanding that by using my WiFi Hotspot it would not use up my data on my cell phone plan.
But it definitely does - how is this happening - what do I need to do to keep my data from disappearing?
Help this is costing me a fortune.

Re: Wifi Hotspot and Data usage

turning your phone into a wifi hotspot DOES use cellular data. It will only not use data if you are not using cellular data but using wifi. Your phone becomes the wifi signal but it using cellular data to make the wifi work.

Where do you think that your wifi hotspot is getting the data from?

Re: Wifi Hotspot and Data usage

Boy, you got that mixed up....

By using a wifi signal provided by an external source, like a modem and router at home or business, you are not using your mobile data.

When your phone is used to provide wifi for another device, that data will appear in the phones usage as tethered data and does count against your phones data use.
