Unlimited Data Plan and Personal Hotspot possible?

Unlimited Data Plan and Personal Hotspot possible?

Hello all,

I have been a customer with AT&T for over 10 years now and was pretty disappointed with the conversation I just had with one of their customer service representatives. Since I first purchased an iPhone I have had the unlimited data plan for $30 that was required for purchase at the time. I recognize that since they've done away with unlimited data as an option, I have not gone over the 2GB $25 plan, but I still have opted to pay the extra for unlimited usage in case the day should come that I needed it.

Today I called the customer service line to inquire about why I was not able to set up a personal hotspot (when I try, my phone tells me to contact AT&T). I was told that I would need to "upgrade" (don't get stuck on the terms) to a 2GB ($25) or 5GB ($50) monthly option in order to use this feature. Something about this seems off to me since I have been carrying forward a plan that AT&T required me to have in the first place, but now it disqualifies me from a feature of the phone - not due to capabilities, mind you.

Does anyone know if there is the ability to combine these two features? Really frustrated with AT&T for making it (seem hopefully) an impossibility.

Appreciated.

Re: Unlimited Data Plan and Personal Hotspot possible?

Well it's like this I'm on the unlimited data plan and used to buy up to14 to 15 gigabytes of high-speed data so whomever said try a different carrier guess what that's exactly what I'm going to do twinkle toe's if you have to go through the acts of congress to be able to use your mobile hotspot on your mobile is a complete ignorant situation in my opinion which the old saying opinions are like rear-ends everyone has one hope I haven't offended anyone but I'll definitely be changing carriers hope you all have wonderful morning and a better tomorrow god bless you all.. But this issue with the mobile hotspot sharing is just freaking ridiculous to me and good luck to everyone...

I'm very disappointed I have been wireless at&t customer for around a dozen years never hada problem with sharing my mobile hotspot from my Microsoft 640 LTE I upgraded it to the Windows 10 and ever since I've not been able to share my mobile hotspot off of my Microsoft 640 LTE mobile to whomever it may concern if this matter isn't resolved I'm seriously considering switching to a different carrier check my record I usually have 14 gigs' sometimes more but if I can't share my mobile hotspot this loyal customer will most definitely be changing carriers hope that you can get this issue fixed hope you have wonderful and blessed day and please!! Let me know how to get this matter resolved I really like your network.. Your loyal customer James Campbell....

Your definition of "loyal" is different from the accepted.   The unlimited data plan options include the use of hotspot on the $90 single line plan called unlimited plus.  The equivalent of paying for an extra plate at the "all you can eat" buffet.  Otherwise the bargain "all you can eat" price is for one, and cannot be shared (the Choice plan) .  This is included in the advertisements and online information on the plans

Re: Unlimited Data Plan and Personal Hotspot possible?

@Jamescampbell Are you saying you can't get tethering to work, at all?

Where did you get your 640, from what carrier or other?  Do you know the *exact* model (under Settings->About...)?

Also, what plan are you on?

I just read @lizdance40's comments (spot-on as usual ;-]), and if you're on the Choice plan, that's actually the biggest differentiation for that plan (vs the Plus), it specifically does NOT include tethering, you must have the Plus plan, regardless of your device...

Give us some more info, but it sounds like potentially you're just not on the right plan, for what you want to be able to do.

Re: Unlimited Data Plan and Personal Hotspot possible?

Verizon did not cancel the ability to tether, at least for the Nationwide Talk & Text plan. I have had this plan since around 2010 and I have always had the ability to tether. In fact, sometimes I switched to a 3G phone when my 4G LTE phone broke and had to remove the 4G LTE hotspot feature as a result, but I was always able to restore the 4G LTE hotspot feature upon again activating a 4G LTE device. I still have the old plan including 4G LTE hotspot; I have not switched to the new unlimited plan due to there is no throttling on either the handset or hotspot on the old plan, whereas for the new unlimited plan there is.

@Gregg3Gs   You might want to zip it, and not draw attention to yourself.

There was NEVER use of the hotspot on the old unlimited plans.  And there has always been some kind of throttle or reprioritization on data at some point.  Not on an LTE plan or device.

Re: Unlimited Data Plan and Personal Hotspot possible?

I've encountered this ridiculous rip off too. We have had personal hotspot for years. Now all of a sudden they say it was their mistake)that we had access. Spent over an hour on the phone, insisted on talking to a manager and they "accidentally" dropped my call. Miraculously when I called back said specialized customer service rep answered my call. Beyond rude. Nothing but a sales pitch with her attempting to get me to drop the program into which we were grandfathered. Talked over me repeatedly THEN claimed she could not send me copies of the contracts she quoted to me. Clearly their technique was first to frustrate me with the length of the initial call, then by accidentally dropping the call, then by being extremely rude. Worst con job customer service EVER. Fortunately I'm an attorney committed to fairness. If I have to have a sit in at their store I will. Oh and we have had UVerse, internet and 2 plans for years.

Worst customer service ever. Over an hour on the phone, then a hangup then a rude specialist who talked over me repeatedly. Adhesion contract, detrimental reliance. Formerly loyal customer. No offer the mediate except an attempt to get me off of our grandfathered plan. Tried to work with you. Call me. Yep, call me gone. And yes? Without resolution I'll be posting my experience everywhere I can.

I had access before now your ride customer service rep said that was a mistake and refused to send me copies of my contracts. How can you justify not holding your rep accountable for the way I was treated?

Re: Unlimited Data Plan and Personal Hotspot possible?

@Flowers123 You can view the last 18 months worth of bills (which have the details of your service), by looking at your account.

After logging on, go to MyATT->Billing and Payments->View My Bill.

This brings up the latest months' charges, and the option to view the full bill/terms (in a PDF).  To pull up previous months, simply select, and view that PDF.

It was a mistake, it's never been available on AT&T Unlimited Plans. I believe when they bought up some smaller carriers, they had some plans with it and let them keep it, but I believe the never offered consumer plans with it.

Regardless, if they want to change the terms of the plan, why can't they? It's like cable TV changing their lineup: If you don't like it, you can leave.

Are you still in a contract on your phone? or are you on next payments now?

Fortunately I'm an attorney committed to fairness.

And you don't have a copy of your contract??? And you want them to supply it to you, seriously? They could send you any version of a contract and you wouldn't know it...

Re: Unlimited Data Plan and Personal Hotspot possible?

I had $60 plan with 8 gb. And i use my iPhone as a hot spot for iPad so my lil guy can watch cartoons in a car. But now it no way to do it because no hot spot anymore on $65 plan. They call it unlimited but it is 22gb and speed slow down. Eventually u can't even see how much data left, so who knows, may speed will slow down just after 20..., or 15..., or even 12gb.
I am very disappointed. It's not fair take a hot spot away. If customer paid $65, what is the problem to let him do with his data what ever he wants to. Because anyway speed will slow down, if it was only iPhone or few hot spot devices. Thanks

The $65 plan is unlimited data at 3 Mbps speed.  It is NOT throttled at 22 gigs.  And it does exclude the hotspot.  The only unlimited plan with hotspot is the Plus plan.

For $5 more you should have asked what the catch was.  (Ta da!).
