Text message fails to send to group chat

Hello!  I am getting an error message when trying to reply to a "group text" with 7 other people.  I am seeing their messages, photos, etc. But can't reply back - each response comes back in a purple color with (!) error code = mixed group of iPhone & Android users.  I have Galaxy S7...

I have tested a separate group of friends to see if they receive my messages, and 2 groups are getting them.  Just this other one that seems to be the challenge - not sure what's going on here! 🙂

"Couldn't send message"

Resend

Edit

This is the language that shows up in the (!) box to top right of my initial message.

thanks in advance for any feedback!!

Hi there.

I'm chiming in since OP did not respond, but I have some details since I have the same issue. Troubleshooting, unsure what to check here. But I can say that I have 3 groups that do not exceed 5 members. 2 of the groups are failing when I send texts to the group. 1 group is working fine.

Multimedia Messages / Group Conversation is enabled.

I can send a photo. I can send audio.  I can send a dumb animated Gif meme thing. But I cannot send text.

Of the three groups, the 2 failure groups have something in common:  In the Conversations list, there's this little icon displaying two heads.  The WORKING group does not have this.

On the group that is working, I get a quick message popup upon opening that says "Group conversations will be sent as multimedia messages."  The other two groups do not have this popup.

It has demonstrated this behavior since I believe Sunday, April 14th, 2019. There was an update that occurred recently, but I don't know its relation.

There seems to be no reason for this. At least not a user-friendly one.  What makes those two little heads appear under "Conversations" anyways?! - I can't even find that.  Little devil heads preventing group texts is what they are.

Any assistance or instruction is appreciated!

Well, I'm going to assume there is no option to tick and un-tick to fix this, so this is what I did, and it fixed the problem:

Navigate:

1. Settings (The global gear thing)

2. Apps

3. Messages

4. Storage

Click CLEAR DATA.

Yes, this will remove EVERYthing. All history, all pictures, all texts - however, this is the magic part - It all comes back.   It all came back. All conversations, all groups... the only thing that didn't come back, was that stupid little 2-headed icon thing that keeps me from sending group texts.  I can now send group texts again in all groups.

... So this is "fixed."

Looks like I spoke too soon. Shortly after everything came back, so did the two little head icons. But this time on ALL groups that were working.  Anyone else wanna try?

ie. It's worse.

Can someone from AT&T inform us what these this little 2-head icon is, and how to disable it?

In my troubleshooting, I also left a group that I can no longer re-join.

Hello,

I have the exact same problem. I get the same error and see the same options when I click on the ! that is inside of a circle. It looks like it is sending for a split second as it shows my icon but quickly changes to the exclamation point ! In the circle. Ive tried everything. I also have the 2 headed icon, but only on one group thread.

I was having the exact same problem. I tried everything. I finally decided to delete the entire non-working thread and recreated it again with the same people (all iphone users). My phone switched it to MMS automatically and finally sent the message. I'm not sure how this affecting my iphone user friends (as far as sending my messages in the same group text or creating a separate individual thread for just me), but it worked. That said, now there is an annoying pop-up every time you open or close your messages, stating "Group conversations will be sent as multimedia messages."

I agree with you horde5150. l'm pretty convinced this is related to the most recent update. I have never had to send group messages specially through MMS, regardless of the recipient's brand of phone. Oh well, hope this works for you guys.

Galaxy9 here had the same problem. Agree caused by update. Possibly the separate heads instead of the number in a circle that appears in other group threads indicates a broken group? As with the iPhone user, after I deleted the entire thread of that group and started a new one, it started working. But I've now lost the history of that thread which makes me very sad. 😕

Thank you so much missnlb. I confirmed as Mjkositzin did, I just deleted all messages in each group, which dissolved the group (a bummer being in three bands, so much info is now gone from all of them) just so I can talk to them again.  Selecting all messages and deleting has "corrected" the issue. Why there was no way to safely convert the group chat, we will never know.

Thanks again to all!
