RCS Support

Google Messenger on Android recently got the ability to support RCS via the app. I was wondering AT&T would enable the feature so I can enjoy it with my friends (who would also like AT&T to enable it if possible).

ATT simply doesn't care, they are the only US carrier not planning to support Google's and GSMA's cross carrier initiative. Their Advanced messaging is already based on RCS which is why it is beyond absurd for them to not support it. Most of their customers aren't tech savvy enough to care, and there's no point asking them here they never say anything useful (another sad fact).

Hello @kendron1908!

Excellent question and I’m really glad you asked! Rich Communication Services (RCS) is a great up and coming service for messaging and AT&T is already on the ball with it!

When it comes to RCS, it is something AT&T is definitely a part of right now. As @Spavacgt mentioned in a previous reply, our Advanced Messaging is already based on RCS. In addition to Advanced Messaging, AT&T also supports Wi-Fi Calling, NumberSync, and AT&T Video Call, all of which are considered rich communication services.

RCS is available to you based on your device and account type. If you have a device that supports HD Voice (another RCS service), then you have that part covered already!

My overall goal when it comes to your services is to ensure that you’re enjoying a seamless connectivity for all of your needs, regardless of where you are! RCS is something that’s available to you at this time via Advanced Messaging and other services, but nothing has been officially announced from AT&T regarding Google Messenger’s ability to support RCS. I would imagine that as soon as a decision is made about it, we would make that announcement public.

Hopefully you found this information helpful and thanks so much for reaching out to me today! You have a good one!

Has there been any progress on this issue? I cannot receive MMS messages on a Google Pixel from an LG with Advanced Messaging enabled, or from half of the iPhones I try chatting with.

Hello @holodyn,

Thanks for reaching out to the Community Forums! It would be my pleasure to get this fixed for you!

One reason the Pixel could be having issues with getting MMS is because of incorrect APNs.  This awesome resource will show what the current APNs are for the network, and we can compare them to the settings on the phone.   If they do not match, we will want to update them and then power-cycle your phone.

Another thing you can do is go into Settings > Apps > find the Messaging App > Clear Cache and Clear Data and then turn the device off and back on.

Hope these steps help! Have a great Holiday season!

At&t Administrators,

First and formost I have to say that "At&t does not care". I spent some time at the "awesome resource" page ensuring my APN settings were correct on my Nexus 5x but I still couldn't receive messages from users with "At&t edhance messaging"enabled. I called At&t support, and when the tech realized I was using a "non supported" phone, that was the end of our session. How is it possible that the Nexus 5x support both visual voicemail and rcs messaging out of the box yet At&t doesn't "CARE" support this phone? I've been an At&t customer for a very long time and don't see how they wont alllow me to choose whatever phone I want? Honestly considering switching to another carrier!

Hello there @nrperales.

I’m sorry to hear that you are having issues with picture messages on your device. This is most certainly an important and convenient feature to have; I believe it’s still the most convenient way of sending and receiving pictures (MMS). It’s understandable that you would want it to work reliably.

Our Advance Messaging feature, which is a modified version of the RCS platform unique to AT&T, is only available on certain phones at this time. However, this should not impede your ability to send and receive MMS. If your device is not compatible with Advance Messaging, the photo will still be sent (if it can be compressed to 1MB or less)

At this point, I believe your messaging woes might be related to an actual issue with the messaging feature. Let me ask you. Does this happen only with AT&T customers? Are you able to receive photos from users on different carriers? We have an excellent tool that can guide you through a series of steps which should help narrow down the problem, and hopefully fix it. Please select your model from the list; in your case you can select the Nexus 6 since they are similar, then choose Messaging as the issue. For a more personalize experience, make sure you are logged in your account online.

If the MMS issues remains, then we will need to do some more troubleshooting on our end. Please send us an private message to @ATTMobilityCares with your name, number and a good time to reach you.

Let us know how it goes; we are looking forward to your answer! Have a great week!

I was just writing about this! I love how the AT&T reps keep posting about how they have lovely RCS support. In all actuality it's not lovely at all. First off they barely support any devices. If you go to their website that shows the list you will probably laugh, and what's more is that RCS on AT&T has been around for quite some time and came out on AT&T around (and don't quote me on this), I think in the fall of 2015. Given thats only about a year, but when you look at other carriers and their support lists its a lot more vast. Sprint has now fully adopted Google's universal RCS standard allowing their customers to have iMessage like features and be able to use them regardless of what carrier their contacts have. Since, a few other companies have joined Sprint. But AT&T has remained silent on this. I understand that prior to Google pushing for a universal RCS, individual carriers were trying to push to have their own version of RCS as a draw point. But, Google is now pushing for a universal standard that would allow Android users to have iMessage like features and message their contacts in a similar fashion. To me it would be worth making your customers happy. If every other carrier adopted the universal standard and AT&T didn't, that would just push so many to leave because this is a feature so many Android users have been begging for, for years. @nrperales I feel you on that wanting to switch! It's frustrating how AT&T keeps boasting their RCS service, but it feels like such a half-$# implementation of RCS. It's lackluster and barely anyone can even use it because their device isn't supported!

@YaBoyDK

The problem att has is they wont to CONTROL everything...  You cant get enhanced LTE services on any device that att does not sell except the iPhone.  You can get Volte on a htc 10 but its not true voice over lte.  It just means you can use your LTE radio for data while talking on the phone.

With Google's latest announcments about RCS support, if AT&T doesn't join everyone else and use the standard way a lot of customers will be leaving to a new carrier, included us.

@jimsearle That is exactly what I was thinking. Just saw the announcement and hopefully AT&T will join them because this is a very big deal and feature we have all been wishing for, for a long time.
