Messages do not load after being off for a while

I turned off my phone over night. During that time my family group messaged multiple times. In the morning I awoke to check messages and saw nothing. Hours later I still have nothing. 

All iPhone 6, my spouse and I both on WiFi in same house, same settings. 

Similar issue for spouse on different day. 

Help.
