How to group text more than 10 on AT&T

Learn what devices support Advance Messaging

_GroupMessageLimit_.png

The Wait is over! Through 2021, AT&T is continuing to increasing the number of people you can group text. It is slowly being rolled out and tested on many devices. Check out David T's  Advance Messaging page for more information regarding group messaging and the new features to come.

***********Information below is still valid for some devices until the update is pushed to it.***********

***********We do not know when your device will support group messaging but it is coming.***********

 Why Are There Limits?

AT&T has implemented a limit to the number of group message participants as a way to protect our customers from spam and/or malicious software. AT&T is vigilant about protecting you, our customers, from unsolicited text message spam.

Is AT&T Going To Update The Limit?

Some devices have the ability to send group messages with up to 30 contacts. More updates are coming to increase that number but I do not have any information when a change will take place. Last updated 2/23/2021.

If spam messages have affected you, you can report them by:

  • Forwarding a copy of the SMS and MMS spam to short code 7726 (SPAM).
  • You are not charged for forwarding the spam message to 7726.

This works.  Google Messages app allows me to send to more than 10 people.

That is not correct - it actually comes up when you try to send; "your
carrier has limited the amount of persons you can message to - to 10"

Giving a lame reason why, but not raising or removing the limit does not help me. As said in many other responses, other carriers don't have this limit—why should I have to suffer because I chose ATT?

I agree! I come from a large family and have 5 siblings. When we discuss vacations or fam get togethers, the group tends to be 14-19. I am the only one in that group that cannot respond. Getting a message "too many recipients in conversation". Everyone thinks I am always ignoring the group. This feature is completely lame. I'm forced to download a third party messaging app that can override this major inconvenience

I'm also affected by the issue as I'm unable to respond to a work group message today. Advanced Messaging is active on my phone but it's blocking me from responding to the chat. When I turn it off, I get a message regarding recipient limit being 10 and I'm still unable to send a message. I already have the google message app, but I'm not about to go around telling my co-workers to use that instead of their phone's native messaging app. I've been putting off switching carriers for a year now (due to various issues). If there really is no fix, looks like now is a good as time as any to start shopping around.

Other messaging apps replace your existing SMS option.  There is no need for others to use the same application.   Have you tried it?

Wow, I can't believe this problem hasn't been rectified yet! This needs to
be changed. This limit of 10 just is stupid, fix it or the customer are
going to go else where!!!!

I switch 6 months ago to Tmobile and quite happy. The monthly bill is
lower. Tax included so it is a nice round number of 40.00 per person.
Unlimited data instead of sharing 15G with 4 people. You get free roaming
outside the US in places like Asia, America, Europe ...

I am an ATT shareholder.

I am an ATT wireless account holder with 4 lines (meaning I'm 40% to the limit just when texting my family.)

I am an ATT Uverse Internet and Digital Phone holder.

I have spent or invested over $100,000 with AT&T within the last 5 years. Easily.

However, I am likely going to end up moving to T-Mobile because of this limit.  It creates challenges for me personally and professionally.  I don't want to switch, but ATT is going to force my hand.

I know how quickly AT&T can update this code and roll it out.  It could be written, tested, and pushed in less than a day.  Please reconsider.  I'll be switched by November 15, 2019, otherwise.
