How to group text more than 10 on AT&T

Learn what devices support Advance Messaging

_GroupMessageLimit_.png

The Wait is over! Through 2021, AT&T is continuing to increasing the number of people you can group text. It is slowly being rolled out and tested on many devices. Check out David T's  Advance Messaging page for more information regarding group messaging and the new features to come.

***********Information below is still valid for some devices until the update is pushed to it.***********

***********We do not know when your device will support group messaging but it is coming.***********

 Why Are There Limits?

AT&T has implemented a limit to the number of group message participants as a way to protect our customers from spam and/or malicious software. AT&T is vigilant about protecting you, our customers, from unsolicited text message spam.

Is AT&T Going To Update The Limit?

Some devices have the ability to send group messages with up to 30 contacts. More updates are coming to increase that number but I do not have any information when a change will take place. Last updated 2/23/2021.

If spam messages have affected you, you can report them by:

  • Forwarding a copy of the SMS and MMS spam to short code 7726 (SPAM).
  • You are not charged for forwarding the spam message to 7726.

I was at my Niece's wedding the other day. My sister sent a message to a large group. I ended up with 9 different threads. Trying to read the messages in order and make sense of them was impossible. Then when I replied on one of the threads,  only 10 received it and as a second thread. Extremely annoying.

10 recipients is not enough. This is a major headache for my social group with 13 members. Please increase the limit.

this is some crap. I was with Verizon and you could add as many as 20 people.

It's been 4 months since the last post on this issue.  Any updates?  Not being able to send out group texts to more than 10 people at a time is really limiting and frustrating.  Please remove the restriction.

I find this policy COMPLETELY out of touch with the consumer sentiment. Try doing even a little bit of market research and you will see how antiquated this policy is.

This policy seems like corporate overreaction to me. AT&T is either avoiding complaints (and possible lawsuits) by transmitting group messages that might be sent to mobile phone users who do not have unlimited texts in their plan and/or avoiding refunds and customer service costs. Consider: a list with 40 people, 10 of whom have a basic plan. If 20 people respond to the initial message, those 10 recipients who pay for a limited number of messages could blow through their monthly allotment with one message -- 21 text messages used as a result of the original sender's message (mathy people can correct me if I'm wrong; I'm a words person). The costs are worse if anyone on the list is traveling internationally, as texts outside the U.S. typically are charged by the foreign carrier, despite AT&T's "unlimited text messages" plan domestically.

Either way, it's another example of not being customer friendly. With today's technology, there likely is a way to minimize AT&T's risks without inconveniencing loyal customers. It just takes creativity and innovation, which is lacking in smokestack businesses like AT&T's.

My whole family is on T-Mobile, and they don’t have the limit. I don’t know what their limit is, but it has to be more like 20. None of them have ever hit a limit, and we have some family threads with at least 15,and I can’t be reply to them. It’s just stupid.

The 10 recipient limit is absurd. Most people have some group of more than 10 people they'd like to be able to communicate with via text. At least give a more reasonable/honest explanation than spam prevention. That is weak.

This is ridiculous. I NEED to be able to text a group of 19 for work and cannot with AT&T. I have been with AT&T since Cingular and now I may need to leave. Bananas.

Please increase the limit of 10 people per text!
