How to group text more than 10 on AT&T

Learn what devices support Advance Messaging

_GroupMessageLimit_.png

The Wait is over! Through 2021, AT&T is continuing to increasing the number of people you can group text. It is slowly being rolled out and tested on many devices. Check out David T's  Advance Messaging page for more information regarding group messaging and the new features to come.

***********Information below is still valid for some devices until the update is pushed to it.***********

***********We do not know when your device will support group messaging but it is coming.***********

 Why Are There Limits?

AT&T has implemented a limit to the number of group message participants as a way to protect our customers from spam and/or malicious software. AT&T is vigilant about protecting you, our customers, from unsolicited text message spam.

Is AT&T Going To Update The Limit?

Some devices have the ability to send group messages with up to 30 contacts. More updates are coming to increase that number but I do not have any information when a change will take place. Last updated 2/23/2021.

If spam messages have affected you, you can report them by:

  • Forwarding a copy of the SMS and MMS spam to short code 7726 (SPAM).
  • You are not charged for forwarding the spam message to 7726.

The "spam" reasoning really no longer is valid in today's technology.  So many of us need the capability to reach upwards of 20-25 people for various activities and this limit of 10 is ridiculous.  I have the need to send to about 17 people for activities 2-3 times each month, sometimes more often.  So I have to send to group 1 and group 2.  And because of that when someone from group 1 responds the people in group 2 do not get to see those responses and vice versa.

A limit of 25 would work for many people.

With spammers and other crap phone call in the tens of thousands, would a limit of 25 really be a problem?

As a "work around" , AT&T could even have people who need to text to larger groups sign up for that "privilege" and then AT&T would know that those people are "valid" senders of larger group texts. I don't really like this idea, but it would work as at least a "work around" for this stupid limit until AT&T gets up to date with this need.

They won't fix anything ... it is a known issue. They dont care ... this
is a very old issue. I am just waiting for a free weekend and switch over
to T-Mobile. I give up on this service. I will probably save
25/month by changing service. At ATT i am paying more for less.

Thanks Chris Z, but the big problem here is that somebody put me in a group text of more than 10 people and I cannot reply to the group. Obviously, if I just take one person out, it changes the whole thread. We should at least be allowed to reply to a group created by someone else.  Thanks.

Hi AT&T - please raise the group text limit to 20. 10 is a ridiculously low number. The anti-spam explanation for the limit is sketchy at best; at worst, it's a naked attempt to drive people away from SMS/MMS and onto WhatsApp, Signal, etc, so we consume more data.

I'm quite confused as to why this thread is listed as a SOLVED issue, except for an explanation as to why this limit exists.

There are plenty of reasons why AT&T customers need the ability to send a group text to more than 10 people.

Yes, there are options available with other services such as Facebook and other apps. While I am quite capable of utilizing other technologies, the problem is that I can't pick a single option that I know that everyone I need to text had that particular app on their phones.

Today I received a group text from a coworker with 13 people in the thread. I needed to reply...but I could not.  That's why I found this thread in the first place.  I thought there was a problem with the settings on my phone. Turns out this is a REALLY BIG ISSUE that AT&T is aware of...but seems unwilling to budge from .

Why not set the limit to equal the limits on the other carriers so it becomes an industry wide issue...and not just an AT&T specific issue.  That way we can reply to group texts originated from all of the other carriers.

With all of the positive things about being on AT&T, why would you want to be in last place in the number of text recipients users can send to?  And why hasn't AT&T listened to most of the posts on this thread asking for a reasonable solution?

As for those who have posted here with rude comments.  Do you really think you are helping the cause by talking that way?  Do you also act that way in person?  That's why I would much rather send out group texts than rely on social media services where people have totally lost their manners...if they were even taught good manners in the first place .

This is an on-going and big problem with their service. This is a very OLD problem. They know it. They are not stupid. Why are they not fixing it ? It is because they don't care and they give you dumb answer like they are limiting it for your own good, they are protecting you. The other carrier don't want to protect you since they give a much higher limit like 30-40 messages.

You are not saying anything new and different from what everyone has said on this board the last 2 years. Go and read the board.

Manner ? People are frustrated and not happy with having to switch all the phones in their family to a new carrier. Good manner won't get it done with ATT. Sometimes Sounding like a holier-than-everyone to strangers about problem that frustrate people for years, is in itself bad manners. Yes ... it is very bad manners wrapped with dishonesty. Do you talk this way to people in real life ?

I am very annoyed with this limit. We have a very tight neighborhood watch group everyone else has apple phones and can send out texts to all the neighbors. I can never respond because there are 15 people on our block list. This limit needs to be raised!

This is a joke!  AT&T get your product fixed!  If "spam" is your concern, let your customers have the option for more than 10.  It's interesting how you say to protect from "Spam," but yet I still receive group text messages on a regular bases with average group of 15, but yet I can't reply.  So if these groups were indeed sending Spam, how are you protecting me?  If you're programmers don't know how to provide a solution, don't use Spam as a scapegoat!  Get your product fixed!
