Does UNLIMITED MESSAGING include E-MAIL services pre-installed?

I was looking a a friend's phone that I might possibly purchase (I have a very, very old at&t phone) and it had an E-mail feature pre-installed (NOT through MEdia net, if i'm correct.) She insisted that it costed extra money because it was through the internet but I could have sworn that it counts as text messaging as long as it is not through MEdia net.

Am i correct? Incorrect? She has the Pantech Matrix, by the way.

She has the Pantech Matrix, by the way. There's a way to send SMS to email, and that will be included in messaging. Using a real email client on the phone will require the use of internet and will be billed as data.
