Data Free Sponsored Data Direct TV NOW not eligible to Smart Limits customers

What is the reason that Smart Limit customers are not eligible for Data Free Sponsored Data through Direct TV NOW? Is this a technology issue?

Because smart limits monitors the amount of data USED.

With sponsored data you are still using the data, you're just not being billed for it.

Smart limits must do its check before the billing, so it's not going to count it properly for you.

It's like your phone, if you use 2GB of "normal" data and 100GB of sponsored data, your phone's counter is still going to say you used 102GB of data.

I suppose I can accept that as a reasonable answer. It's a bummer that the system can't account for this and allow me to get sponsored data.

To me, it would be okay for Smart Limits to count all of the data including the sponsored data. In my case, Smart Limits is preventing my free data for Direct TV Now.

Smart Limits is for all lines, not just one line?

You don't let the kids use DTV NOW?

The FAQ page says as much as I did in the subject line. It does not answer my question.

I guess I need to ditch Smart Limits and hope that iOS 12 will grant me the parental controls that I need.

I'm not sure that I fully understand your question. All lines are affected by Smart Limits being attached to the account. I have no issue with everyone using DTV NOW on all lines. I only use Smart Limits to restrict nighttime usage hours. I don't care about notification of data usage with Smart Limits.

It appears that no one on any of the lines regardless of how Smart Limits is configured is eligible for free data (sponsored data) with DTV NOW. DTV NOW data counts as plain old 'mobile data' with Smart Limits.

That answered it!  You don't can how much they use, it's when they use it.

You might look at other option for turning off network access.  My router has parental controls for Wifi and turning off data can be done free in My ATT.  And those don’t cost you $10 a month either.  I used to have Wifi set to turn off while the kids were supposed to be going to sleep and turn on an hour later.

Thanks for the suggestions. I do use my wifi router's capabilities in addition to Smart Limits. I know of no way to automate routine data shutoff through ATT without Smart Limits. Only way I know to do it with ATT service without Smart Limits is manual and requires it to be done every night and morning. Is there another automated feature that I have not found?

True there is no automated way to shut off data.  It’s manual, but free.
