Text Messaging - Picture and Video Support

Text Messaging (MMS) - Photo attachments - Quick Fixes

Sending and receiving text messages with pictures or video (MMS) attachments is a basic function. However, with so much diversity with devices it can be a challenge to understand how your new AT&T device handles MMS messaging.

A great first step is to view the AT&T device specific tutorial you can find by visiting our ‘Device Support’ site.

  1. Upon reaching this site select your device’s brand or model
  2. Search for Send & Receive Messages

Or you can simply use our AT&T Troubleshoot & Resolve (TSR) tool for personalized troubleshooting of your device.

Device & network requirements
Picture and video messaging uses Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) to send and receive audio, video, and picture messages across Android devices. To use picture and video messaging:

  • You must have a picture and video messaging-capable wireless phone.
  • You must be on an LTE or GSM network supporting GPRS transport.
  • Your phone must be on and in a data coverage area to receive the picture or video message.
  • If the phone is off or out of the coverage area, the message will be stored for up to 72 hours and delivered when the phone becomes available.

Picture & video message size limits
The AT&T mobile broadband network delivers picture, video, or audio messages of up to 1MB:

  • Larger media file attachments are compressed before sending to keep the message size below 1MB.
  • The maximum size for sending and receiving picture, video, or audio messages is also dependent upon the recipient's device and the limitations of other carriers' networks (e.g., other carriers may have a lower message size limit than AT&T).

Advanced Messaging

Advanced Messaging offers an enhanced experience for text and multimedia. You can send files up to 100MB on select phones. If a file is too large, Advanced Messaging will attempt to compress it.

Features
Advanced Messaging offers the following:

  • Up to 100MB File Transfer: Send high-quality pictures and longer videos.
  • Delivery & Read Receipt: See when your messages have been delivered and read.
  • Typing Notification: Know when the person you're messaging with is typing a response.

Enable/Disable Advanced Messaging and read receipts on your device

  1. Open the messaging client and tap Menu > Settings > Advanced Messaging.
  2. Tap On to Use Advanced Messaging. Tap Off to turn it off.
  3. Tap On to Send read receipts. Tap Off if you don’t want to send read receipts.

Requirements
In order to enjoy the benefits of Advanced Messaging, both you and your recipient must have:

  • Postpaid AT&T wireless account provisioned with HD Voice.
  • Advanced Messaging-capable device.
  • Up-to-date software installed on your device.
  • Device and Advanced Messaging turned on.
  • Device within AT&T owned and operated domestic network coverage.
  • Have the Enhanced 4G LTE Services setting on your device ON

Limitations and incompatible services
Advanced Messaging has the following limitations:

  • Available only within AT&T owned and operated domestic network coverage.
  • Not available for AT&T PREPAID (formerly GoPhone) customers.
  • Doesn’t work with the following features:
    • AT&T Smart Limits.
    • SMS or MMS blocks you have added to your account.
    • Data blocks you have added to your account.

Note: If you have one of these features, they must be removed from your account for Advanced Messaging to work.

Hi ,

I have a LG V20 unlocked phone. I have installed a at&t sims card. Phone has very poor cell service. And will NOT send or receive attachments using text messaging.

My wife and I have iPhone X's,  she has the Xs and I have the Xs Max.  We're on the same family unlimited data plan.  Neither of us can send MMS messages to our friends and family who have an Android phone or aren't using iMessage.  We've tried everything (turning MMS Messaging and Send as SMS on, and off.  We've verified we're on a data plan, and connected to the data network.  We've called AT&T tech support and they worked on it for 2 days, and we are still stuck.  They told us to go to the Apple store, which we're going to try this afternoon, but I'm extremely skeptical since - it's both of our phones that don't work, not just one defective unit.  Looking for any other things to try...

In case anyone else has the same problem, I had recently switched from Verizon to AT&T, and both my wife's iPhone Xs and my iPhone Xs Max were unable to send pictures (MMS) to anyone who doesn't use iMessage.  Apparently, Verizon had configured something in the settings that disabled MMS at the carrier level.  Once we reset her entire settings (not just networking, but all of them), MMS started working.  I'd gone the route of completely wiping and resetting my phone (I use Google and other cloud providers for all my data, so no biggie), but that worked as well.  Again, resetting networking settings has no effect, you have to go deeper than that.  Hope this helps someone.

How did you go about resetting all of the settings? I just bought a Verizon phone on an AT&T plan and after changing the APN settings, I can do everything with the exception of send/receive Multimedia messages.
