Text Messaging (MMS) - Photo attachments - Quick Fixes

Sending and receiving text messages with pictures or video (MMS) attachments is a basic function. However, with so much diversity with devices it can be a challenge to understand how your new AT&T device handles MMS messaging.

A great first step is to view the AT&T device specific tutorial you can find by visiting our ‘Device Support’ site.

1. Upon reaching this site select your device’s brand or model

2. Click ‘View all Solutions’ typically located in middle of page

3. Under ‘Device Topics’ to the left, select ‘Email & messaging’

4. You can now click through tutorials specific to your AT&T device

Or you can simply use our AT&T Troubleshoot & Resolve (TSR) tool for personalized troubleshooting of your device.

Device & network requirements
Picture and video messaging uses Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) to send and receive audio, video, and picture messages. To use picture and video messaging:

  • You must have a picture and video messaging-capable wireless phone.
  • You must be on an LTE or GSM network supporting GPRS transport.
  • Your phone must be on and in a data coverage area to receive the picture or video message.
  • If the phone is off or out of the coverage area, the message will be stored for up to 72 hours and delivered when the phone becomes available.

Picture & video message size limits
The AT&T mobile broadband network delivers picture, video, or audio messages of up to 1MB:

  • Larger media file attachments are compressed before sending to keep the message size below 1MB.
  • The maximum size for sending and receiving picture, video, or audio messages is also dependent upon the recipient's device and the limitations of other carriers' networks (e.g., other carriers may have a lower message size limit than AT&T).

Advanced Messaging

Advanced Messaging offers an enhanced experience for text and multimedia. You can send files up to 10MB. If a file is too large, Advanced Messaging will attempt to compress it under 10MB or notify you that the file can’t be sent.

 Features
Advanced Messaging offers the following:

  • Up to 10MB File Transfer: Send high-quality pictures and longer videos.
  • Delivery & Read Receipt: See when your messages have been delivered and read.
  • Typing Notification: Know when the person you're messaging with is typing a response.

Enable/Disable Advanced Messaging and read receipts on your device

  1. Open the messaging client and tap Menu > Settings > Advanced Messaging.
  2. Tap On to Use Advanced Messaging. Tap Off to turn it off.
  3. Tap On to Send read receipts. Tap Off if you don’t want to send read receipts.

 Requirements
In order to enjoy the benefits of Advanced Messaging, both you and your recipient must have:

 Limitations and incompatible services
Advanced Messaging has the following limitations:

  • Available only within AT&T owned and operated domestic network coverage.
  • Not available for AT&T PREPAID (formerly GoPhone) customers.
  • Doesn’t work with the following features:
    • AT&T Smart Limits.
    • SMS or MMS blocks you have added to your account.
    • Data blocks you have added to your account.

Note: If you have one of these features, they must be removed from your account for Advanced Messaging to work.
