Error code 771 on local channels only

Two of the last three days, have lost connectivity to local stations (Baltimore) only, with error code 771 being displayed. Called tech support and was told problem was with local aggregator. They had no idea who it is nor how to hold them accountable. Any suggestions?

What model Receiver/DVR do you have?

Please post back with your signal readings for each satellite's transponders (and both tuners if applicable).  You'll find these readings under "Menu" -> "Setup" -> "System Setup" -> Satellite -> "View Signal Strength".  Note the "+" and "-" symbols next to the "Satellite" and "Tuner" entries where you can toggle the readings between the various satellites and both DVR tuners.

Fill in your readings for each satellite and tuner using these examples.  A properly aligned dish will show 80-90s on most of the relevant transponders (although some will be low or zero):

Satellite transponders (32 total at 101º)

[Most of your standard definition channels are beamed from 101ºW]

You have zeros on most all the even numbered transponders so you'll find you are missing a lot more than just the local channels.  The major cause for this condition is a loose, corroded or faulty connection in the coax between the R16 and the dish.  It is also possible that the problem lies within the R16 itself.  Check both tuners in the R16 and see if you get similar readings.  Similar readings would tend to indicate a R16 problem.  A problem with only one tuner would tend to indicate a coax problem.

Go check to make sure that your connections are all tight and not chewed on.  How much snow or ice is sitting on your dish, or on the LNB?  How old is your cabling, LNB, dish, receiver or dvr?  How old is your SWM?

With just one Receiver it will be difficult for you to troubleshoot this yourself.  At least check all of the coax cable connections that you can easily access.  But it could be a defective dish LNB or Receiver.  Hard to say.  Best to call DirecTV for a service visit.  It's free if you have their Equipment Protection Plan.  Otherwise no more than ~$50 regardless of what needs fixing.

Only have one receiver. The problem is only with the local channels. Have checked other channels in the 200 & 300 range and there does not appear to be a problem with them. Don’t understand how a physical problem with either the cable connections or the receiver could affect only the local channels.

The receiver is about 3 years old. The dish and cables are about 10 years old. The dish was originally from Direcway when they offered both Internet and TV service. Still use the same dish but have TV from DirectTV and internet from Hughes Net. Have no problems with the internet service.

No snow/ice on the dish.

I stand corrected. I went through all of the channels and some channels in the 200-300 range get the same error message. Thanks for your help and we will call for service.

Understand that the R16 has two tuners.  This is confirmed by two coax feeds.  When I asked you to check the signals on tuners #2 that was intended to see if the problem was in one of the two coax cables.  You access the second tuner by looking at the signal strength and pressing the + button in the upper right of the screen.

Checked and reseated all of the outside cable connections. Called tech support and the solution to the problem was a static charge on the single cable going into the back of the receiver. Once disconnected and reseated, problem solved.

Cables are that old, most likely water has gotten inside them, and the connectors are corroded most likely.  You can get the Coax that DirecTV uses, along with the connectors & Tools, through amazon. Personally I'd much prefer to pay Directv $50 to send a tech to replace any coax that needs it plus fix any other problem they find.  You'll spend more than that buying the correct tools, fittings and coax to make the replacement and you aren't 100% positive the new coax will correct your problem.

As advised, placed service call.  Very frustrating with the telephone call tree but finally got a service call scheduled.  Technician actually showed up a daily earlier than scheduled and was very helpful.  Problem was a bad coax connector at the LNB.

We are full timers and like to get local channels we would like to get Denver channels the zip code is 82072 where we are staying now. How do we get the locals.

We record most of what we watch and over the last few weeks certain channels mainly Hallmark and TNT are giving a 771 error code. The recording is garbled. Why is this happening.
