Error Code 771

I have tthe Genie DVR and 2 remote clients with error code 771 Satellite signal on 1. This started about 3 weeks ago and is on all my receivers after channel 23.  It is sporadic between odd and even channels. I have called Directv and they are of zero help.  I have had Directv since January then this started. I have tried cable connections and such.  on my transponder every 4th channel is at 0 on each row.

Thanks, I am finding Directv is not that good a deal and all other conversations have been locked concerning this issue.

If you'll post back your signal strengths it will help diagnose your problem.

You'll
find these readings under "Menu" -> "Setup" ->
"System Setup" -> Satellite -> "View Signal
Strength". Note the "+" and "-" symbols next to the
"Satellite" and "Tuner" entries where you can toggle the
readings between the various satellites and both DVR tuners. If you have a DVR
it's important to check BOTH satellite tuners.

Fill in your readings for each satellite and tuner on the new post you create,
using the example below as a guide. (The example below is only an example and
not a form that will appear in your post unless you "cut" and
"paste" it.) A properly aligned dish will show 80-90s on most of the
relevant transponders (although some will be low or zero):

Satellite transponders (32 total at 101º)

[Most of your standard definition channels are beamed from 101ºW]

So the Directv installers do a poor job installing the dish and then charge me to come out and fix the problem? What a racket. I think I will check with the BBB and the FTC for fraud charges. It seems they do this on purpose in order to get additional money... sort of like bad car mechanics.

If the system has been working normally since January and now all of a sudden the dish is this far out of alignment then some event occurred to move the dish.  That event likely had no bearing on the original installation.

Of course, if this problem was evident from the day of installation you should have notified Directv right away.  You can buy the Protection Plan for ~7.95 per month and it will cover tech visits.  If you ask, they may allow you to charge the first visit to the Plan.

Actually you are incorrect Mr. DCD. I pulled my ladder out and crawled onto the roof to check the dish myself based on your comment. I found that all the mount bolts that the incompetent installer used to install the dish were only put in about 9/10ths of the way. I came down off the roof, got my tools and tightened all the bolts up and shazam! the signal came back in! I am sure not all 4 bolts loosened up magically, or somehow undid themselves. This is just more of the service I have received from DirecTV, shoddy work and never the ability to listen. I had asked the installer to put the dish at the back of the house (which faces south and no obstructions) and the incompetent dolt put the dish on the northeast side of the house! He wrote on the install sheet he would come back in the spring to move the dish for free based on his mistake and repair/replace the shingles. I called his number in the spring/early summer and it has been disconnected. DirecTV said I could pay them to come move it..... another case of poor customer service and customer relations. I know DirecTV does not care about their customers for sure now. Once I am done with the stupid contract I will be going back to Comcast. At least when it rains or snows my signal doesn't fade out, or heaven forbid it is too cloudy.

Regards.

Error Code 771

reply from dcd in DIRECTV Receiver Technical Support & Troubleshooting - View the full discussion

I am a first timer DIRECTV customer, my system was installed on in Feb., 2013. Now in Oct., I am getting error code 771 & really only get local channels but of course NOT THE STARZ I am paying extra for! After resetting my hard drive (taken 2hrs to complete & wiping out ALL OF MY RECORDINGS!) it's still not working. Now they suggest a Technician comes out (earliest 5 days from now!) to realign my satellite. It will be a $45.00 charge unless I go with the service plan of $7.99/mo.; equaling $90/year! I am between a rock & a hard place. So help me God, if it only takes them 10 minutes or is something simple I could have done, I will BLOW MY LID OFF! This experience has been a nightmare since day one.

NEVER in 20+ years did I have any problems with Charter & if I did a technician was out right away. Hate DIRECTV wish I would have never changed

Best to start your own new thread using the "Create New Post" button on the main forum page. Your problem may very well be different from the original poster's. With a new thread you can provide more information about your equipment (model numbers), location, and troubleshooting you've tried so far. And this forum software makes it difficult to track or respond to folks that add onto someone else's thread. Thank you.

Resetting the hard drive never solves 771 issues, the CSR should never have suggested this. . You either have a misaligned dish (most likely), a cable problem, or (least likely) a faulty LNB at the dish or faulty receiver.

The tech will almost certainly be able to fix these issues.  But you say this has been "a nightmare from Day 1". What other problems are you having?

To texasbrit-my main complaint back in Oct was I made at least 8 calls  & I got a different answer from each CSR (my phone deducts minutes even for Toll Free numbers). Honestly, what YO-YO is training all of these people! I did finally find out with code 771 resetting the hard drive was not solution but that was the first CSR's suggestion, so ALL my settings where lost. Knowing computers, I figured as much so I made manual made notes of EVERYTHING, it was a Nightmare!
After waiting 5 days for their technicians I notice they were jiggling my pole & planned on cementing it in for $45.00! I remembered when the pole was installed by their Contractor in Feb., he wrote on the receipt there is a 1 year warranty & if I needed cement he would do it for Free. After 2 calls to him, I finally spoke with him & he said he would do it the same day so I sent the DIRECTV tech's on their way & asked for a $45.00 refund.
This brings up my first experience with DIRECTV. I wasn't told their was a $75.00 charge to install the pole in the ground until he arrived.  Shouldn't I have been told that; how else are you able to receive their service without a dish? Besides I would have preferred the satellite to be installed on the roof but I don't think he wanted to move his lazy ass to get on my roof.

Since then things have been going OK, I had to learn a lot on my own (to me their remote was totally foreign!). Now whenever there is a outage I call immediately & ask for a refund. But one more major problem or unexpected expense, I am going back to Charter!
