DIRECTV NOW Solutions & Troubleshooting Steps

 

Can't stream? Try the solutions below. 

 

Apps and Devices PC and Browser
  • Force close the app
  • Delete cache and cookies
  • Reinstall the app
  • Make sure you have the latest OS for device
  • Speed Matters (more info below)
  • Turn off apps you are not using (more info below)
  • Have the right speeds (more info below)
  • Try another device

 

  • Restart the browser
  • Clear cache and cookies
  • Verify you have the latest browser version
  • Try another browser like Chrome or Firefox
  • Test your stream using another device
  • Disable web-add ons

 

 

 

 

Speed Matters

An internet plan of 6 mbps or higher is great for one stream but not ideal of you have a lot of streaming devices. The more internet devices you have, the more speed you will need. Wondering what speed you need? Check out our Speed & Device page to figure out the right plan for you! 

 

Turn apps or browsers you aren't using

Apps running in the background use up resources. It's like trying to carrying 20 grocery bags by yourself, not good. Turning off apps can improve your DIRECTV NOW experience and your overall streaming experience. Wondering why? Some apps, like Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, use a portion of the internet signal. Start a fresh connection by resetting your internet connection and restarting your browser.

 

Heads Up: Multiple browser tabs can affect your experience. Close them out and try streaming again.  

 

Electronics can affect your stream

The environment of your streaming device, and modem, can affect your stream. For example, electronics like speakers emit electromagnetic interference that affect your stream and internet speeds as a whole. Moving electronics away from your streaming device, and modem, can help improve your experience. Check out what a recommend modem setup looks like

 

Streaming on the go with LTE

Location and environment of your mobile device can impact your streaming and in some instances, your call and texting experience. Our Signal Solutions page has tips and solutions that may help improve your stream. 

 

Other things to try and things to know

  • Disable firewalls and virus scanners temporarily to see if streaming improves.
  • Some devices use more bandwidth than other devices because of their internal setting. 
  • Rooted device are not supported by DIRECTV NOW. Check out the list of supported Device & Operating Systems

I believe the service was released early to gain, $$$, early adopters, apease shareholders. I am waiting for AT & T to fix this mess, add functionally(search, universal sign in, etc.), Increase the required resources needed to correct this. In addition - you should be required to credit me for services not delivered.

Obviously, we...the customers, have to pay $$$ for such DTV-N beta-level service, which shouldn't be rolled out into the production from the beginning.

 

From Nov/30/2016 - when I signed up for the 1st DTV-N promoted service, the availability issue has been intermittenly occurred on & off.  Until today - Jan/13/2017, there was a major service outage...all channels were completely affected, since 07:00 in the morning (when I need to check all the news channels for my work).

It is quite unfair for all of us - as the customers, to pay $$$ for DTV-N incompleted product, especially, there were many service outages.  On the opposite, DTV-N should consider to pay the $$$ to everyone of us, who has such a high hope & crazy enough to subscribed for such a beta-level service from DTV-N, as the guinea pigs.

Totally agree with everything you said! The live stream has LESS freezes but it does freeze a lot. I havent had ONE on demand show work without freezing and having to refresh constantly. They have all these recomendations to "optimize" your streaming experience but you know what I had to change to get all of my other streaming services to work perfect? NOTHING! I really wanted this to be good. The channel line up IS better than Sling and HBO for 5.00 is great but DTN works so poorly I find myself just getting angry for spending any money on it. I have successfully been able to watch ZERO on demand content from start to finish. My paid month ends on February 10th and you have a lot to fix to keep me as a customer. I am angry and feel I have the right to be. I do feel that credits (if you fix it)or refunds are do for tricking people into being your beta testers. Before anyone questions that it's something I'm doing wrong. Once again, you know what I had to change to get ALL the other streaming services to work? NOTHING!  That is what is expected from a streaming service. I expected some growing pains, a glitch or two but this, SMH.

Error message trying to use browsers since late morning EST

Since before lunch EST today 1/19/17,  every channel I try to access in Safari on my Apple machines and IE  on my windows machines returns the same error:

 

Error Message 40: Video Error
You receive Error Message 40: Video Error.

This message indicates trouble while loading video content. We may be experiencing a temporary glitch in data transmission and will resolve the issue as soon as possible.

You can also try the following:

Restart your device/player.
Close and restart DIRECTV NOW app.
Check for DIRECTV NOW app updates.
Uninstall/reinstall DIRECTV NOW app.
Check for device software updates.
If you experience playback issues using the Safari browser, we recommend using the Chrome browser to continue watching DIRECTV NOW.

Note: DIRECTV NOW does not support rooted or jailbroken devices - that is, phones, tablets, or other devices from which users have removed carrier restrictions to gain extra controls.

 

Folks, you really have got to get a handle on this because the user experience is just not good.

I can't even get this to work at all. I'd switch to Sling TV but I want to get my $$ refunded first. This is appalling.

What about Apple TV box that is 3 to 4 years old that we updated the software on? IS that supported by DIrectv?

Is it a ATV3 or 4? You can always test it and see.

If the Apple TV supports third-party apps (it has the app store on it), then it supports DirecTV Now.  The earlier models don't, since there is no way to load the app...

just lower your video settings on your vid card and you should be good. I did and all stream issues are gone.
