No Internet Connection with Android GenieGo App

I have been patiently waiting for GenieGo OOH support on Android. I downloaded the latest app to my tablet (Samsung 10.1) and it works great. My phone (Droid RAZR) is another story.

After the app auto-updated I started it and it says I'm not connected to the Internet. I have Verizon 4GLTE with a full set of bars. Additionally all kinds of other app like the browser and e-mail work just fine. After messing with that for an hour I uninstalled the app and installed a new copy. It ask me to log-in to my DTV account. Now I get a message saying, "You are not connected. (POSIX/51)"

I assume that is still a no Internet connect message. A Google search was a dead end. A search in the DTV site gave, "No results were found for "POSIX51".


Does GenieGo not support streaming over 4GLTE?


An interesting side note. I set up the phone as a WiFi hot spot (tethering) and connected to it with the tablet and it worked perfectly just as I expected so I know the 4GLTE connection is capable of streaming the GenieGO signals.


Does anybody know if the Android version of GenieGo does or does not recognize 4GLTE as a legitimate Internet connection?

OK, I found the final solution to the problem...

In the Settings is "Streaming Options". Then a check box "Streaming on Cellular".

The default is: UNCHECKED, so no 4GLTE streaming.

Now here is the kicker. You can't log-in if that box is not checked and thus, you can't get to the settings.

You MUST connect via WiFi first, sign in, and then go to settings and check the box. Now you can turn off WiFi or leave home and GenieGo works just fine on 4GLTE.

For those that were concerned about data charges there is a warning if you are streaming on cellular.

I'm pretty sure that Verizon doesn't support DirecTV's video streaming over their 4G network.  You must have a WiFi connection instead.

Interesting and thanks for the thought. You can be sure I'll have a talk with them soon. I have some errand to run tomorrow and will be driving right by their store. I'll see what they have to say.

If they don't I'll have to let them know I'll be rethinking my service after more than 10 years.

Take a look at the link and you'll see the following: "stream your shows instantly anywhere you have a Wi-Fi connection".  I don't think the GenieGO OOH is designed for 4G and if that's the case no need to be upset with anyone.

I disagree. With the last update from Google Play (November 5, 2013) I find the following:

It's not just Verizon.   I think the GenieGo App limits Out-of-Home streaming to WiFi connections to avoid shocking users at how much of their data downloads they've used.  Stream video files can easily chew up a few GBytes of your data allowance.

Once again someone or some company telling me that they know better what is best for me? If I want limits then I should be the one to decide, not DTV.

More and more I feel like DTV ripped me off with GenieGo by telling me half-truths and possibly outright lies.

I wonder if the Apple folks are having this same problem. Anybody out there?

I said that out-of-home streaming is not supported via LTE network, only WiFi.   My GenieGo app works fine on my iPhone and iPad via WiFi.

You're right, the website link you offered does specifically say "Stream recordings from your HD DVR outside your home, requires an active 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi Internet connection." for the Android App.  The Directv site that I referenced indicates that only a Wi-Fi connection would work.  I'll leave it to others to test out the 3G or 4G connection for streaming.  I think if this is a fact then there will be a lot of folks overusing their restricted 3G and 4G systems.

Yes, Android just got a MAJOR update, not only does it allow OOH, streaming, but DirecTV also remove the WiFi restriction which iOS still has

Late last night I received a note from DTV support indicating that the issue has been sent up to the next level of support. At this time I am taking a wait-and-see attitude.

PS excess data usage -- That kind of thing should not be a DTV problem, that's a user issue. As for me, I get 10 Gb a month.Several carriers advertise unlimited text and data with their plans.

I dont think is about limitation, but rather making sure that the app provides a nice experience while on cell and this requires the player to adapt to less then optimal connections.  As you can see by the Android update this is already happening.

I downloaded the geniego update to my galaxy nexus yesterday and was able to stream on Verizon 4g with no problems.

There is a chance that this is only a restriction on the Droid RAZR. After years of Motorola phones I will be looking at Samsung for my next upgrade. My Samsung tablet (Galaxy 10.1, wifi only) is really nice the way it takes advantage of Android features. Motorola just seems too restrictive.

Yes, I found the same issue with the login when I installed the app on my husband's phone. That's something that needs to be fixed. Glad you got it up and running though.

I updated the DTV Support incident with my finding. I guess it is up to them now.

Meanwhile, the folks on this board will be able to address the issue with anyone else that has a problem.
