TV not staying on when playing DirecTV music channels through soundbar

When I try to play DirecTV music channels through the soundbar with the TV off (since there is nothing to see on the screen) the sound shuts off after about 45 seconds.  As recently as two months ago, it continued to stay on.  What has changed?

Re: DirecTV music channels

Let me say this a different way: I have a soundbar directly wired into the Optical output of the HR54 receiver. When I listen to the music channels, I would like to be able to turn off the TV (since there is nothing to see) and just listen to the audio feed through the HR54. IT WON'T ALLOW ME TO DO THAT. Within less than a minute after I turn off the TV (leaving the HR54 and sound bar still on) the music coming through the soundbar turns off.

Apparently this is how the HR54 has been programmed, although it is not clear why this should be the case. Is there any way to tell the HR54 that is should continue to provide an audio feed after the TV is turned off?

Re: DirecTV music channels

Could be HDCP that is disabling the DTV receiver outputs when the handshake is broken by turning the TV off.

...and if that is the case, how do I get it to stop doing that?

Re: DirecTV music channels

You can't easily. When you turn the TV "off", it breaks  the HDCP protocol and so the HR54 switches off the outputs.

But my guess is that if you connect the TV via an HDMI powered splitter like those from monoprice it will maintain HDCP and allow you an audio feed.

Re: DirecTV music channels

After your first hint about the HDMI cable being the culprit, I pulled the HDMI cable to the TV, and instead connected to the "A/V Out" outlet on the back of the HR54. The cable I attached has five wires (R,W,R,B,G) on the other end, which plug in to the TV, thus taking HDMI protocol out of the equation. The soundbar now works (through an optical cable connection to the HR54) without having the TV on.

Many thanks for your help.

Re: DirecTV music channels

It's not the cable but the HDCP software if you unplug both ends of the HDMI cable will do the same thing as the component 10 pin din cable.

Re: DirecTV music channels

Why are my DirecTV music channels now censored? And when will the loop be updated? After about 6 hrs, the same songs begin again.

Re: DirecTV music channels

DTV has no control over what a channel does with its programming.

Re: DirecTV music channels

They changed providers to Music Choice in a cost saving move.  If you like the channels you had before, they don't care.  And if hearing the same songs every single time you turn it on matters to you, they still don't care.  Money, money, money is all that matters.  Sorry, but AT&T has destroyed what was once a great service.

Try Slacker Radio on the web, I found it in desperation after they changed the provider and now have no use for DirecTv service.

Re: DirecTV music channels

I certainly agree with the very limited repertoire with Music Choice. Boring selections, limited artists, the same songs every night.
