Genie or HDDVR Upgrade

Genie or HDDVR Upgrade

I currently have five standard Directv receivers, two of which are DVR. I was offered to upgrade to the Genie 2 with five wireless receivers.

What seemed like a good deal on the surface, doesn't seem so great now that I've done some research.

Our setup is: standard receivers in each of 3 bedrooms

DVRs in living room and family room

Is it correct that if we were to switch over to the Genie 2, we could only use 3 clients at a time? That just wouldn't work for us, as we often have 4-5 tvs going at once.

I'm thinking I might prefer to go the HDDVR and standard HD receiver route. I hate that I have to switch any of this, as I couldn't care less about HD. I also am frustrated that Directv can't ship equipment to me, but only can schedule an installation. We are capable of installing ourselves, and it is a huge hassle for various reasons to have someone come to the house.

I appreciate any insight or advice.

With a Genie 2 you can use 7 clients at the same time, with a total of 8 connected. Each TV will have a client and the Genie 2 will work as the Wireless Video Bridge/server. However, if you have a Genie 2, you have to use Genie Minis aka Clients. These can be wire, wireless, 4K (which is wired and can only have 2 4K minis), or a combo of all.

The HS17 Genie2 doesn't have the 3 at a time limit but it has other bugs.

Can you elaborate on the bugs?

I still can’t find any way to just get this free upgrade (if I choose to go this way) without a scheduled install.

I was told a preferred retailer could provide the equipment outlined in my offer but I’ve called two and they stated they could not.

Re: Genie or HDDVR Upgrade

you have the option to go hd boxes and a hddvr. If you have standard boxes now you will be eligible for a free standard to Mpeg swap at no cost etc... Until your next upgrade. As last as the agent puts it through correctly. I believe that would be a better option than the genie 2. My onion I would not install a genie 2 in my house cause of the software that it runs

Re: Genie or HDDVR Upgrade

That’s very interesting. Can you elaborate as to why you wouldn’t install a Genie and the software ? I really don’t know much about it.

The csr offered me a Genie 2 or 4K but not an HD/HDDVR option for the upgrade.

@cathyn35

Genie (HR34, HR44, HR54) can work with full receivers as well as Clients. This allows flexibility of additional tuners, independent processing, and more reliability.

Genie-2 (HS17) only uses Clients as it forbids everything else on the account. It hard caps the tuners and Clients cannot work without the main box so if it has an issue, there goes all your TVs

What are the models of each box you have now?

Re: Genie or HDDVR Upgrade

Standard receivers are D12-100

DVRs are R16-300.

I did a live chat with csr and misunderstood my offers. None of them include the full five receivers I need to replace.

Offers are:

Genie plus 2 minis or

Genue 2 plus 3 minis.

My account online also offers a free HDDVR. I contacted a dealer who said he’d give me a discount on HD receivers if I buy three.

I’m more confused than ever on what to do.

Re: Genie or HDDVR Upgrade

The mpeg 2 swap offer should replace ALL of your standard receivers not just some,  however I'm not sure if the system will force a genie with 4 minis or allow an HD-DVR with 4 h25s, (more than likely it will force a genie and 4 minis) your dish also needs replaced since your current dish isn't capable of aiming at the HD (mpeg4) satellites. Hence the need for a tech to install. Do NOT go with the genie2 it prevents anything but minis on the account although it will allow all 5 TVs to view DirecTV as opposed to a regular genie only allowing up to 3 minis streaming at the same time.

D12 and R16 are all MPEG-2 boxes. So all 5 of them need replacing. The complementary MPEG swap should replace all 5, but this is where it does get a little tricky at that many.

Normally it is expected that a DVR setup gets a Genie with Mini Genie Clients as the swap. Request the agent choose Genie and Mini as MEPG swap (not upgrade) to replace the D12s. Even if they cannot manually select the R16s to swap, the system should flag them as incompatible with the Genie and add in the two extra boxes automatically (experienced this when looking into upgrades when the Genie was new and we had some very old boxes).

As mentioned, the Genie can only use up to 3 Clients at the same time as they are extensions of the Genie. You might have to consider doing an upgrade to get a HDDVR instead of a Client. At that point you would have the normal $10 HD and $3 Whole Home DVR service in addition to the $10 DVR service you are paying now. And an upgrade comes with a 24 month agreement.

Because your setup is a bit large for their complementary swap, call DirecTV and when you get the voice prompt say "cancel". This should get an experienced account specialist who may be able to process the order as you need. If they cannot arrange the order to replace all 5 boxes, with no more than 3 Clients in the order, I would ask for a supervisor. Regardless if it is just an MPEG swap order, or if they have to do an upgrade order as well just to cover all 5 boxes, there should be no cost for the orders as this is all required to continue using the service because of the MPEG-2 shutdown that happens in a few months.

Re: Genie or HDDVR Upgrade

Thank you for the advice.

I’m now stumped at the odd upgrade offers neither of with equals the number of receivers I have now. So from what I gather a Genie with 3 clients and even a standard HD receiver would be the way to go.

I will give them a call and hope it goes well.

Re: Genie or HDDVR Upgrade

They were probably optional upgrade offers instead of the complimentary MPEG swap.

Genie with 3 Clients and a non-DVR receiver (H25) would be the most likely end result. Just do not get more than 3 Clients at most or you cannot use all your TVs together. And avoid the Genie-2 (HS17) as it has built in restrictions and not as reliable as a normal Genie. Remember to check the order confirmation you receive to make sure everything is as expected.
