Fuzzy HD Picture during NFL broadcast

Fuzzy HD Picture during NFL broadcast

We are new to HD TV with DirectTV.

I notice that in certain displays of NFL football, there is a slight distortion of figures in distance shots of the teams on the field. The outlines of the players seem to be fuzzy or ghosted.

When the camera zooms to a nearer view the picture is crisp.

Is this normal?

Re: Fuzzy HD Picture during NFL broadcast

Yes, it's normal.  You're seeing the effects of MPEG digital video compression, which is most noticeable during live sports broadcasts.  That's because sports broadcasts have lots of fast motion and must be encoded in real time, unlike movies or TV shows that can be encoded more precisely.   But note that your HDTV might have settings like "Motion Blur Reduction", or "Refresh Rate", or other settings that can help or hurt this sort of problem.
