U call them at customer service and tell them what U wish to do. They will send U what they call recovery kits and U put them into the boxes and send them back and I have never been charged anything to do this. I take mine to the post office.
Make sure U are not tied into a contract and end up owing them a lot of money. If the units are really old, they may not even want them returned. I had two HD DVR units, the HR21 and on one, they asked me to send back the access card and they sent an envelope for that and the other, they didn't ask for anything back.

Do not attempt to send back any materials without a recovery kit. The kit contains a pre paid shipping label with a bar code identifying your account etc. Directv gets thousands of returns a day and any without a code are dead filed.

You need to call/chat with DTV.

As stated you need to call/chat with DTV to deactivate it so they will send a recovery kit.

To return a receiver/client:
Call Directv 1-800-531-5000
They send a return box to your physical service address by FedEx
The included return label (can be found under the sending shipping label) will be for return by USPS (not UPS).
Any non returnable models would just be the return of the access card.
This return process has been the same for years.
As a note, do NOT return Directv and AT&T equipment together as they are separate return processes (at least for now).
