Adding External 4 TB HDD is not recognized by HR54-500???

HELP!!!  I have a HR54-500 that I want to add a 4TB Fantom eSATA HDD for extra storage. The Fantom 4TB eSata HDD is in a Rosewill RX-358 U3C eSATA enclosure and I have unplugged HR54-500 and plugged in eSATA cable between both. Then powered on Fantom 4TB drive then replugged in HR54-500, It went thru the setup and started up on INTERNAL 1TB drive. Everywhere it says it's plug n play if the external drive is attached. I have tried this procedure 4 times same result.

What is up? What am I missing? Do I have to format the new 4TB on computer or something? Why won't it see added external 4 TB drive?

Re: Adding External 4 TB HDD is not recognized by HR54-500???

Hey there, @tonyc2011, we're here to help!

When connecting an external hard drive to your HR54, the external hard drive is reformatted. Any data previously on the drive will be lost- it could be that your receiver is having issues reformatting the external hard drive, so you may need to reformat it on a computer.

Aside from that, here are the steps to get it connected:

  1. Unplug the receiver's power cord.
    • Do not use the Power button alone.
    • The Power button does not turn off the receiver totally.
  2. Look for the port on the back of your receiver labeled SATA.
  3. Connect the external hard drive with an eSATA cable.
    • Make sure the cable is firmly connected on both ends.
  4. Turn on the external hard drive and give it several seconds to boot-up to speed.
  5. Plug in the power cord of your receiver.
    • The receiver automatically resets when plugged back in.

If you do continue to have issues, there may be something wrong with the eSATA cable, or the third-party hard drive you are using. Keep us updated on if this helps- we'll be here to assist if you need anything!

Re: Adding External 4 TB HDD is not recognized by HR54-500???

Thank you for the information. I took the Fantom drive and hooked it by USB to my computer. I used "disk management" and the drive was not in the list. Also tried another USB cable to no change. Contacted vendor and they said it looks like bad drive, so they are sending me a new one. When I get the new drive I'll let you know progress.

Thanks again
