  • Record a show
  • Find your favorite content
  • Rewind, Forward, Pause content

If you have a compatible Amazon device and DIRECTV satellite service with an Internet-connected Genie device, you are moments from setting up this amazing feature!

Want to take advantage of this cool feature! Order an Alexa Device and DIRECTV today!

Access your Alexa account

Sign in to the Alexa portal or download the Alexa app.

You can get the app on Android (version 4.4 or higher), iOS (version 8.0 and higher), and Fire OS (version 2.0 or higher). Find it in Google Play, the Apple app store, or the Amazon app store.

Set up the Alexa skill for DIRECTV

  1. Make sure your Alexa device and DIRECTV device are connected to the Internet by pressing the right arrow twice on your DIRECTV remote. If the DIRECTV interactive TV app list appears, you’re connected.
  2. Go to the Alexa app or the Alexa website.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • In the Alexa app, tap the Menu icon, then Music, Video, & Books, and then DIRECTV.
    • On the Alexa site, choose Music, Video, & Books, then DIRECTV.
    • In either the Alexa app or on the Alexa site, select Skills, then Search, and then enter DIRECTV to find the skill.
  4. Choose Enable Skill and follow the prompts. If you have multiple accounts, select DIRECTV.
  5. Select Finish Setup and let Alexa find your nearby DIRECTV device(s). This can take up to 20 seconds.
  6. Pick the DIRECTV device you want to set up. Find out which DIRECTV device you have.
  7. Choose 1 or more Alexa devices to use with the selected DIRECTV device.
  8. Select Set up a DIRECTV Device to connect another DIRECTV device to a different Alexa device. Or, use the back button to return to your DIRECTV settings.

Heads up: You can use more than 1 Alexa device to control a single TV (i.e., a single DIRECTV device). But you can’t use 1 Alexa device to control multiple TVs (i.e., a multiple DIRECTV devices). For additional detail read our support article, Set up the DIRECTV Alexa skill.

Hi @Conbob,

To confirm, the error message says "Alexa not compatible with this new equipment"?  Do you have a screen shot by chance as well, and did you set up on your PC or a cell phone?  Any additional information you can provide would be great.

Thanks

Re: DIRECTV & Alexa – Control Your DIRECTV Experience With Your Voice!

Just ran across this news.  Too bad we don't get emails from AT&T or snail mail about setting this up.  Another failure on AT&T's part.   Anyway, I have an Echo, 2 Spots, 4 Dots and 1 Show.   Was able to set it up easily following the instructions stumbled upon on this site.  Took less than 1 minute.  I tested it as I was watching a pre-recorded show.  Asked it to pause, and it did.  Asked it to resume, and it did.  Will play with it more to get more familiar with the commands.

Re: DIRECTV & Alexa – Control Your DIRECTV Experience With Your Voice!

When I try to enable the skill on Alexa and pair the Directv service I continue to get the 'We were unable to link DIRECTV at this time' message. I have validated the username/password or correct by logging directly into DIRECTV. Any ideas as to next steps?

Re: DIRECTV & Alexa – Control Your DIRECTV Experience With Your Voice!

I have a Genie Gen 3.   Be sure your TV is actually connected to WiFi, and do a refresh.  Also be sure your TV it’s connected to your 2G network.  Same with your Echo. Be sure it’s connected to your 2G network.  Check to be sure your Genie is compatible.  I read where the Genie 2nd Gen might not work with Alexa.  Log into your directv account, then use the drop down and click on equipment. You’ll know what you have.  Also. This Forum also has a thread on troubleshooting directv and Alexa connections.  Good Luck..

Re: DIRECTV & Alexa – Control Your DIRECTV Experience With Your Voice!

I've tried that. I even tried connecting my genie 2 to wireless and that still didn't work. My last hope is a power cycle of everything and see if that works.

Re: DIRECTV & Alexa – Control Your DIRECTV Experience With Your Voice!

I did it using my IPad....don’t know if it makes a difference using a laptop, cell phone or iPad.  I did log off and logged back in too.   Who knows....these gadgets are getting a little too complicated and it could be a problem on Directv’s / AT&T’s end too.   Good luck...I hope you get it working.

Re: DIRECTV & Alexa – Control Your DIRECTV Experience With Your Voice!

I'm having trouble getting this to work for me.  I was able to link my account and enable the skill without any issues and I was also able to assign an echo to the Genie.  However, each time I issue a command, I always get the response from Alexa: "I had trouble connecting to DIRECTV...".

Alexa works fine otherwise and I did verify that the Genie is connected to the internet by doing a speed test and the icon on the Menu/Guide shows that it has a signal...plus I can watch On Demand without issue from any TV.

I have the Genie Gen 2 (HR44-500 - not the Genie 2) and several Genie Minis (C41 and C51).

Things I have tried already:

-Reboot Genie DVR

-Reconnect Genie to WiFi

-Unlink and Relink the Amazon skill

Alexa might not support the command. Try saying it a different way or check
