I was contacted by a person from phone number 1 800 988 2020 about a DirecTv promotion that would give ALL CHANNELS including ALL movie channels for $99.99 a month. They required that a 3-month advance payment of $300 be made with an eBay gift card using the validation code that they provide to you because Ebay was sponsoring the promotion. Once you process your $300 to validate your participation in the promotion they will send a $100 Visa gift card as a thank you. The transaction had to be completed by 9 pm in order to qualify for the promotion. I, of course, DID NOT complete the transaction so I got a callback today that my $300 payment was showing still pending. I advised the person that I was aware that this was a scam and he immediately hung up. I just hope no one fell for this SCAM.

Unfortunately you're done. They ask for gift cards because basically they are cash and untraceable.

So I fell for it also. They were able to give me the extra channels before I bought the ebay cards. So basically they hacked into direct tv? So if this is the case, shouldn't direct tv be accountable

I did not fall for this, in part due to 1) a standard-operating-procedure internet query which brought me *here*, and to other confirmations that this was a scam, 2) initial suspicion that the terms were too good to be true and that AT&T ain't gonna be that generous or do biz like this, & 3) the gift-card payment thing is just about always a Huge Red Flag.
I'm waiting to see if they will call back, since I declined to follow-through. Along with the fake promo code, they supplied the # 888-707-5806 to call for more info, and to accept the offer. At first thought, I'm wondering why (the real) AT&T does not trace down these #s and prosecute the perpetrators ? But, judging by their accents and the poor line quality, it is very likely that they are working from overseas and out of legal reach. If they are indeed hackers, it is not exactly startling that they have your name and account info when they contact you with their pitch.
