number changed to primary

With my iphone XR, ive noticed that every non-iphone user I try to text always has this annoying "number changed to primary" message after each text. Ive done just about every suggestion i can find. *After scrolling through Ive realized its most of the non iphone users. not all.

Let's look into this for you. If you haven't already, try resolving your experience by clearing the message thread from each contact the the prompted the" number changed to primary".


Then, start a new message thread with each contact whose message thread you've just cleared and test your results.


Also, try resetting iMessage by removing then re-adding your phone number from iMessage and FaceTime.


  • Go to Settings > Messages > then turn Off the toggle for iMessage.

To add your number back to iMessage and FaceTime:


  • Go to Settings > Messages > then turn On the toggle for iMessage.

(For FaceTime, repeat the above steps except select FaceTime.)


The alert “Number changed to Primary” should appear only once in Messages app after you've opened the Messages app and sent a text message to one of your contacts. Make sure to send a few more text messages to verify the issue is resolved.
