Hello Community,

Although this is an older thread, we still see a lot of traffic and similar questions for this issue. We wanted to take a moment to summarize the issue, and provide a solution.

The Error & The Fix

The error you are receiving indicates there was an issue with your Visual VM, and it needs to be set up or reset up. Sometimes calling your voicemail (pressing and holding 1)  and listening to a message may resolve the error. If that does not work, we recommend you visit our Troubleshoot & Resolve app listed in our Visual Voicemail support link for specific instructions to resolve this on your device.

Resetting the network on the device has been a fix in some instances. Please understand, resetting your network will delete saved Wi-Fi Networks

Note: Because many devices use this feature, be sure you have the correct device selected for the tutorial.

I had same problem and pressing 1 to dial voicemail fixed it without doing anything else.

The iphone voicemail app appears to lose sync with the carriers voicemail. By pressing 1 and going into voicemail the old-school way, it dials into the AT&T vmail server and you are prompted for your passcode. I entered the passcode and recorded a new outgoing message. Then I hung-up. Immediately the visual voicemail started working again and voice messages started appearing again.

No iphone setting changes required.

Good Morning,

I had this error as well.  Go to settings and turn your cellular data on.  That fixed my problem, hopefully it will fix yours.

It is already on, so that wasn't the problem.

Ur phone shoud not be running on Wifi. Only cellular data. Turn the wifi off and turn the data on. Save ur vm greeting after that DONT forget to turn ur wifi back on.

OK, after talking with AT&T support, I was ready to do my "last resort" action of doing a complete restore of the iOS and reloading from a backup. However, I decided to make one more attempt and wouldn't you know it, this time everything worked! I even redid it a couple of times to make certain. Thus it looks like there must have been some glitch ether in the phone, at AT&T's servers, or in the cellular connection between the two.

So a big THANK YOU to all who replied with suggestions even if they didn't pan out in the long run.

Still have this problem with my 2nd line (business line) and I've utilized the recommended fixes. No joy. Based on the number of complaints on this simple issue, you would think Apple would actually address it with programming instead if this Junior Acheivement / do it yourself approach. It's nonsense. BTW - no problem with my primary ATT number, so this can obviously be fixed pretty easily.
