Want an iphone to use on At&t without data plan

I am currently with At&t & not under contract and would like to purchase an iphone from ebay and use it on my At&t network without paying for a data plan. What should the iphone listing say to make sure it's compatible and how do I make sure I'm not paying for a data plan? I want to use the phone purely to text and call and do not care for other features such as internet. Thanks

not going to happen on a normal account, data is required for any smartphone, if you don;t add one, one will be added automaticly. You try try prepaid sims, while they do work, you are on your own to get it working - att will not supply any assistance

just becasue you feel it is evil does not make it any less of a legally binding contractual agreement. Lots of things in the world are evil, they have existed for milineums past and will exist into the future. Go prepaid and you will not be required to have a data plan, but then again iphone is not supported for prepaid so you are on your own

THANK YOU!!!

DOes this work for any carrier?  Where I live, there is a monopoly controlled by the local phone company and Verizon is the only cell carrier in the area.

No, it won't work on Verizon Wireless.

Probably from mobile, maybe. :)

Please, I think we both know it has very little to do with you wanting to reuse an "old" iPhone but more about you wanting to use a phone in a manner that best suits you, regardless of whether it goes against carrier policy.   I mean, what's the difference between using an "older" model iPhone and a newer one?  Are you saying that had it been an iPhone 4S insteadof an older iPhone model, you wouldn't be asking about wanting to use it on AT&T without a data plan?

I said I would "probably" feel not BAD! I did not say I will get a new phone.

wow, this was a helpful answer. "quit being cheap and pay for the complete service required to own a smartphone." there are so many replies to this that involve some people's parents and being cheap about sending their kids to decent schools.

if it comes down to that they don;t need a smartphone, besides the schools do not allow any phone to be used when in class. Sorry in 95 percent of the cases outside of a business no one needs a smartphone, want one - yes, need one no

You're right, it's almost unbelievable what comes out of some peoples' mouths. Unfortunately, most of them do not understand - or are unaware that "cheaper" alternatives exist!

You should consider yourself lucky. Just because you haven't had a data plan automatically added doesn't mean your "solution" will work for everyone. I'm sure there is a reason your iphone has not been detected and a data plan added and most likely has nothing to do with cutting your sim card. Take the time to search this forum and you will see many posts from people that had a data plan added when they put their sim into a smart phone. Are you saying none of those people know what they are talking about?

Of course, this only pertains to post paid plans. If you are on a pre-paid plan, data is not required.

As ppl said. Won't happen. ANY carrier with a modern phone REQUIRES even a basic plan. Get a basic plan, cheap, the turn off cell data on ur iPhone. This prevents u from getting an ipad, iPhone etc and ending up with a few thousand bucks

This way,  u pay very little for a small data plan, then turn off cell data. This prevents u from going over. Keep in mind with data off, u can only send basic non picture texts. Once on wifi, u can use iMessage to other iPhone users and do whatever you like

BAD ADVICE as your phone carrier may constitute that as FRAUD and terminate your acct. I've seen friends do this and att, sprint, etc TERMINATED THEM. Don't screw with your SIM cards.  It was one thing wwhe u needed to trim a Sim to fit a micro sim slot when those devices first came out... But cutting a SIM to defraud your mobile carrier to get a plan that you shouldn't be able to get/keep???

BAD ADVICE. Ppl here know what they are talking about. They just didn't offer an immoral solution.

keep it up and one day, att will terminate your acct, or FORCE u off that sim and onto a current plan

dont listen to this person... Bad advice!!!!

more then mms will not work with this method - there are other functions like visual voice mail for 1 example that require cellular data, turn it off and no voicemail for missed calls. Also unless they already have a individual or family plan only Mobile Share is available now, individual and family plans have ben discontinued for new customers, and it is required that you choose a shared data amount

It's not about being cheap, it's about being smart. If you have wifi access at home & work, why pay $30 a month for data? If you don't get it, that says more about you than the OP.

Not sure what you think it "says about me" I follow the rules in my personal life and in the company I own. Lots of situations in life have requirements that will not be waived no matter what, an example of this would be mandatory auto insurance, mandatory home owners insurance on a house that has a lien against it.

The top 3 carriers require that a data plan be attached to a smaty phone under regualr contracts, you want to utilize a smartphone with out a data plan then get a gophone plan, simples as that. It's all about following the rules that are given to you.Besides you don't have to pay 30.00 a month, there are cheaper plans available AND they give you unlimited talk and text.

No data is required on a GoPhone plan only. Any other plans require data for smartphones.

Another thing to remember, the iphone has functions that require cellular data, such as visual voice mail. Without a data plan it will not work

I (as well as several family members) have Visual Voicemail working on my prepaid iPhone without a data plan/package. I've been using mine since June of 2012 and it did not show up until about late June or early July of this year, but it still works.

Interesting, Apple states cellular data required, mine does not work when I turn off cellular data either or place it in ariplane mode - which it is in alot sice the phlistines still will not let me use my cell in the air

Note he says "without a data plan", not without a data connection. Perhaps there is a way to allow a data connection on prepaid without having a data plan for items like MMS and visual voice mail, i.e. functions that require a data connection but don't count against a data plan.

You can go on prepaid on our network and not have any data plan requiremeint, this includes the iPhone. You just have to specify when go to a store or even over the phone that you don't want to have one of the smartphone plans.

With that being said, VVM may not work since you don't have an active data connection. MMS will work however as long as you have celluar data turned on (the device won't be able to access the the internet, but will be able to send picture messages)

Hey little birdy

Feel free to confirm it here.

Here is the website list of plans, based on basic phone/smartphone

http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/plans/prepaidplans.html

You still must pick a 'smartphone' plan, but it's clear data is optional.

The $25 & $50 option do not include data by default.

This reply was unnecessarily sarcastic and abusive - OP was not "being cheap", they simply don't want to pay for a service they have no need for.  Sounds reasonable to me!

Sarcasm is not called for. I, too, purchased an iphone not realizing data is required. I do not need or want data - just a quality phone to use AS A PHONE!! It is called a P*H*O*N*E!!! D-uh!

How in the world would the carrier ever know?   You aren't altering the plan, after all.  You're simply getting the same service you already pay for and not being duped into buying a service you don't want or need.

Ok I'll bite--so how were you planning to use those features/apps that require data and you don't have immediate access to Wifi?  Or if you're gonna say that you don't need to use any of those data-required features/apps at all...then why would you need/want to use an iPhone?  Like you said, you just wanted a (quality) "phone to use AS A PHONE!!  It is called a P*H*O*N*E!!! D-uh!"--there are plenty of other "quality" phones out there that work just fine as a phone, so if all you're looking to do is to use a phone "AS A PHONE", then why you would elect to go with a smartphone (model) that for all intents and purposes, shines when used for sending/receiving data in addition to being used just "AS A PHONE"?

I mean, it's your money but your argument comes across as a bit weak when you're saying that you want to use a phone for its most basic function--"as a phone", yet of all the phones you are looking to get/use for just that one basic purpose...you elect to go with an iPhone?  That's sorta like saying that you just want/need a car that will do what its main purpose is--namely, one that you can drive--and you elect to get a Ferrari but argue that you don't need to use it to its full capabilities (e.g., drive really fast), where something as simple as an econobox car (Sentra, Civic) would fit the bill nicely and more affordably.

I can identify with the "defendant" about the desire to use a high quality phone (such as an iPhone), even without a data plan. Fortunately, I have been blessed with the information that iPhones can be used on prepaid GoPhone plans without a data plan; which is exactly what I have been doing for the past 2.5 years (started with a 3GS, now have a 4). I chose not to opt for another feature phone for three reasons:

• I knew ahead of time that I could use a smartphone with a prepaid plan without being forced to pay for a mandatory data package.

• I wanted something that I knew was going to be reliable - something that would last me at least a year or two. Feature phones I have had in the past hardly made it past 6 months without failure.

• I wanted something that would essentially act as my sole computer as I seldom use a desktop or laptop for web browsing. Might seem kind of strange, but it's the truth.

Granted, I am restricted to Wi-Fi usage ONLY, but that's fine with me. If I want to look something up on the go outside of a Wi-Fi zone, then I must wait until I can find one to use. I don't mind waiting - patience is a virtue. It would be nice to have a data plan to use every once in a while, but I cannot justify the additional cost. Perhaps in a few years I will join the bandwagon. But for the time being, you can't beat $25 a month!

Wild Banchi--no argument from me as to why you'd opt for using an iPhone as you clearly indicated that you'd be using it like a computer...whereas the other person essentially--if not clearly--implied that he/she wanted to use a (quality) phone as a "phone"--in which case there are plenty of "quality" phones out there that will do such a basic function admirably and without the requirement of having to subscribe to a data plan.

Sometimes I wonder if some people have/want iPhones simply to look "cool" and/or not receive riducule from their friends and/or colleagues if they were caught dead using a phone that was used back in the stone age...I remember when flip and slider phones were all the rage...but I digress.
