Using iPhone 6S internationally

I purchased the iPhone 6S a little more than 2 weeks ago in the USA. I'm on a prepaid account and assumed it was unlocked as I had purchased the phone outright. I am now on vacation for a month in Australia - i got a local sim card and plugged it in but came up saying the sim card is not supported, as if it was locked to a network. Why would this be an issue if I had bought the phone outright and not locked into a contract?

All ATT branded iPhones are sold locked to ATT, regardless of the price paid or contract status. I believe only the sim free model comes unlocked out of the box. Had you put in an unlock request before activating on prepaid, you could have gotten it unlocked. Now that you have activated the phone on prepaid, you have also activated the 6 month requirement for prepaid service before it can be unlocked. Since you paid full price for the phone, you may be able to get that requirement waived.
