Use AT&T locked iPhone with GoPhone?

I have been given an iPhone that is locked to the AT&T network. The previous owner replaced it with a newer model. Can I use that phone with my GoPhone account, or would it need to be unlocked first? If it would need to be unlocked, how would I go about that (if possible), given that it doesn't have a phone number associated with it? Thanks.
