iPhones are unlocked through Apple servers. You need to request the unlock through the AT&T unlock portal - www.att.com/deviceunlock.

If the unlock is approved, you will get the unlock instructions along with the unlock approval email.

Unlocks are accoumplished by backing up and restoring the phone through iTunes with a valid AT&T sim.

 Thank you very much.

I have another question..

I still have an old iphone4 that was replaced by my iphone 5 when  i resigned with ATandT.

It is not active and not in service with any other carrier.  I want to unlock it so I can use it outside the USA.  Can I just go to any Apple store and request fro this phone to be unlocked?.
