Unknown number added itself to my group text
Tonight, I sent a routine text out to a group of four friends and got a response from a fifth number -- a number that's not in my contacts and was not included in the group text. I'm in Texas, and the number is a Connecticut area code. I asked who it was, and the response was, "This is kev." No Kevins in my contact list but one, and that's not his number. How did this happen?? I'm more than a little creeped out.

Hi,
There are a couple of steps which may help delete that additional line that is added to a private message or group thread.
The first step to take is to clear the messaging thread on your phones. These instructions will show how to do that on the iPhone 14. Scroll to the section Delete a message or thread. Once you’ve deleted the messaging thread, you should power cycle (or restart) your devices.
Another thing is to check your group messaging threads to make sure there isn't another number added to an active group. In the same set of instructions above you will find steps on how to enter multiple recipients before composing a group message.
Follow those same steps to check and clear the recipients field. You can find additional assistance from the Apple support article: Send a group message with your iPhone.
Hope this helps,
David, AT&T Community Specialist

I was on a family group text and suddenly a random number replied. Then two additional numbers sent texts to the four of us in new threads. One of the numbers just called, but of course I didn't answer. All four of us are with AT&T. All strange callers are from Florida area code.

Same thing here. Sent group text to 2 other people last night, got responses from 3 different unknown numbers. Appear to be Penn area codes.

This happened to me and my friends tonight, two separate new group chats with all of us and two people we didn't know, both Colorado area codes...what is it?!

5 people were in a group text. Without anyone of us adding a person, somehow a 6th number which we do not know joined our group text. They too did not know us. What's up, very scary AT&T.

Had this same problem today 3 times. 3 different phone phone #s from across the country. No idea who the others are or how many other people saw our group messages and didn't ask who we were. Really disconcerting AT&T. Our group (close family) are strictly AT&T phones.

Maybe I should ask if you were one of our mystery texters. Are you an 864 number? Receive some 209 messages?

This happened to my friends and me last night as well. Seems it was an ATT glitch? Anyone figure it out?

This happened to a group text we were on. Alabama mixed carrier, mixed os phones just started joining a group text message from California. We all thought it was a joke pulled by the others in our text. It turns out that their group was a mixed carrier, mixed os group of phones too. This is a big issue! What would have happened if there was personal information being passed between our group and then their group got it. What if it was medical information or financial information? I’ve googled for days to see how this could have happened and I have still not seen a good explanation. This happened around October 19 2017 around 9pm cst
