To avoid any roaming charges, put your phone in airplane mode. If you don't do that, make sure you at least turn data roaming off. Data usage is what runs up the bill and your phone will use data even while in your pocket, if you let it. You only get charges for calls and texts if you make or receive any calls or send any texts. If you don't call or text and have data turned off, you won't get any roaming charges.
