Power saving on iPhone5

Know that some apps use location when using them; ie, SIRI, MAPS, Camera, Compass, Weather, etc. Question is, do they track your location even though you have not activated the APP? If so, what do you do in SETTINGS to prevent that? Will appreciate any suggestions for reducing power usage. Thanks.

No, apps do not track your location when not active. The easy way to tell if location services are active is a little diagonal arrow next to the battery indicator.  You can also disable location services in settings.

You will see the arrow as stated above. There are a number of apps such as remineders, google with Google Now activated that use geo-fencing to provide information as you move.  If your iPhone is plugged in, maps will track you for the purpose of providing traffic information.  If you go into Settings>Privacy>Location Services>etc...  From here you will see all the apps that can use location services.  You will see a purple arrow next to an app that is or has recently used the location services features.  A gray arrow for those used with the last 24 hours.  You can then decide if you want to turn off that apps access to the location tracking.  Most use the data for specific informaiton for you or they crowd source the data to provide an overall general idea of what is going on in the area.

Thanks to you and YoungJM - very helpful comments. Books and internet comments I have seen do not address fact that APP is not tracking if unactivated.
