Why is my hotspot super slow after I upgraded my iPhone 7 software?

So I upgraded my iPhone 7 software from iOS 10.3.3 to iOS 12.1 and my hotspot became SUPER slow after updating. Back when I had iOS 10.3.3 I had 30+mbps and now on iOS 12.1 it’s less than 10kbps. It really frustrates me since I play video games on my hotspot and it’s nearly impossible to play them unless it’s a mobile game. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello @Jack_Jack, and thanks for reaching out to the AT&T community for help!

Making sure that your iPhone 7 is up to date and capable of handling mobile app gameplay is very important to us! You can try these troubleshooting steps:

1. Reset Network settings: This will reset your WIFI networks and passwords, cellular settings, Bluetooth and VPN settings.

  • Swipe down from the Notification bar.
  • Select the Settings icon and enter Network Settings in the search field.
  • Select Reset network settings or similar option (e.g., Network setting reset).
  • Enter your password/ Passcode and select Reset Settings.

2. Always check for latest software updates for the iPhone 7/ 7 plus.

3. Always check for any updates with your mobile game app for bug fixes and improvements.

4. Restart your apple iPhone 7/ 7plus by holding down the power button until power off options appear on the screen. Then turn back after 10-15 seconds, hold the power button down until device turns back on.

If the troubleshoot still persists, you can also visit our Device Support Article and follow the additional steps, or also visit Apple Support/ Hotspot for further information.

We hope this helps, and you have a great day!

I am required to use a corporate VPN for my work.

The VPN will not connect over AT&T hotspot on my phone.

Many people have had this issue.

How do I configure my laptop so the AT&T iphone 6 hotspot will allow the vpn to connect the laptop and corporate servers over my AT&T hotspot?

@sunseekin You have to VPN to a VPS, and then to your work, if you work is expecting a dedicated IP (provided via the VPS), or a given set of port-forwards.

AT&T uses what's called "carrier grade NAT", which unfortunately means you share an IP, with multiple users, when using your device as a hotspot.  This can tend to be incompatible with many VPNs, games, etc.
