Can I wait to activate an upgraded phone?

Recently bought an iPhone 8 for my son, who is currently using a 6.  I want to hold the phone until Christmas, then activate it.  Any issues with doing that?  His 6 is still working and he doesn’t know I bought the upgrade.  I am assuming I can just upgrade his phone on the 25th when I give it to him.  Anyone know if that’s an issue?

Hello @DLM-NY

That's a great question!  You can wait till Christmas to activate his new iPhone 8 (8).

Make sure the 8 has a SIM card inserted before trying to activate it.  You can use the SIM card hes using in his iPhone 6 (6) to activate his 8, as they both use Nano-SIM cards. If you need help transferring your SIM, you can check out Device Support > Insert Sim Card.

If the Nano-Sim from the 6 does not work in your new 8, you will need to use the SIM that came with the new device and activate it by att.com/activations.

Wishing you, and yours the very best this Holiday Season!

If I upgrade my daughter's phone for Christmas, will it send a text to her phone that her phone is on the way? I believe this has happened with my other daughter when i upgraded for her birthday. I want it to be a surprise. Is there a way that this text can only go to the primary account holder?

Let's address your upgrade notification inquiry @MrsMelRogers!

We recommend Updating Your Billing Contact Info for your accounts to change the phone number, paperless billing email and mailing address of each of your AT&T accounts and Update Your Contact Email For Your User ID for online payment receipts or other notices. Lastly, learn more about User Permissions for your wireless account to manage any secondary user access.

We hope this helps! Reach back out to us if you have additional questions. Thank you for reaching out to the community!
