Can I unlock an old phone to enter a sim card with data?

I live in the US, but will be staying in Iceland for the next 8 months. Cell phone plans are expensive (no longer offering $30 passport plan), so I want to buy cellular data via a sim card and put that in my (old) phone. Will I be able to unlock an old phone in order to do this? Is this process as simple as taking the current sim out and putting in a new one? There is currently no number associated with this phone.

You should be able to unlock an old phone provided it is not too old. There are cases where a phone is so old, ATT no longer has the unlock code. You also need to ensure your phone is compatible with whatever carrier you plan to use in Iceland. Having an unlocked phone won’t matter if it won’t work in Iceland. But provided the phone is compatible and unlocked, yes it is as simple as putting in the SIM card from the new carrier.
