If AT&T force this service on all users, I will move to a different carrier. I have been a loyal customer since I first got an iphone3.
I have 5 devices using AT&T for voice and data. In addition as the buyer for all tchnology in the tricounty courthouses, I will stop using AT&T.

1. It is not ATT "forcing" the alerts, it is set out by the FCC - you know that "goverment" organization so all carriers will be doing it

2. Eventually ALL US carriers will be doing this. Verizon and Sprint already have it

If you purchase Special services - aka t1, oc3, etc and you are in att country you will never get away from att, since no matter who you get your services from - guess who owns the final mile infrastructure for those t1's - att.

Re: AT&T to add alerts from government that you can't turn off

Hello guys,

I hope I can help you understand what those alerts are, here is AT&T's FAQ:

http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB410692&cv=820#fbid=SU22f0k6Lg_

It does clarify in there that one can not opt out of presidential alerts, FCC is an organization that regulates all us communication companies, they make those policies:

http://www.fcc.gov/guides/wireless-emergency-alerts-wea

This is from their site:

Can consumers block WEAs?

Partially. Participating wireless carriers may offer subscribers with WEA-capable handsets the ability to block alerts involving imminent threats to safety of life and/or AMBER Alerts; however, consumers cannot block emergency alerts issued by the President.

Why can’t consumers block WEAs issued by the President?

In passing the WARN Act, Congress allowed participating carriers to offer subscribers the capability to block all WEAs except those issued by the President.

It applies to all participating carriers, here is Verizon's FAQ:

http://support.verizonwireless.com/faqs/Wireless%20Service/emergency_alerts_faq.html

"You may change settings within your device to opt out of Imminent Danger and Amber Alerts, but you may not opt out of Presidential Alerts. "

You can easily find the same info on other carriers.

As far as I know, Presidential alerts are very rare and he/she only issues them about the most important issues, like a declaration of war or major epidemics, disasters and such, I would want to know I think.

Re: AT&T to add alerts from government that you can't turn off

I'm actually a little upset that AT&T doesn't offer this in my area. While out to dinner a few nights ago, my friend got an Amber Alert notification on her cell, and I didn't. She has a different carrier, and I thought it was a great idea.

Re: AT&T forces customers to get Obama Alerts on their iPhones

Don't worry, you are not charged for this service. And it is not used to see what is in your phone. It would only be used to announce something very important such as our country being under attack. You can just delete the message if you want.

I think that idea is Great if I was in the US I would adopt that option,

I don't really get to hear the News until the evning so having myphone there

to remind me of important stuff would be neat Smiley Happy

im sorry everyone else thinks otherwise though  Cat Sad

Last time I looked the US had 50 states unless something happened overnight in the world.

Alaska is one of the 50 states however a lot of companies don't acknowledge. And most of the ones that do raise the prices on everything. A lot of "anywhere in the US*" deals have fine print that say "excluding AK and HI"

Is the network update something I do, or is it something I just wait for?

It will automatcily occurr. A lot of offers exclude both states not becasue don;t consider them as part of the US, it is becasue of the horrendous cost of shipping and lack of transportation methods to all but the larger cities in the case of Alaska.
