"AT&T Address Book" constantly shows "Sync in Progress"

I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge on AT&T.

The "AT&T Address Book" constantly shows "Sync in Progress". This eats up my batery life, and I am unable to stop the sync. Do I need the "AT&T Address Book"? Is there a way for me to delete this application? I cannot seem to figure it out! HELP!!

My wife has the same phone on Verizon and does not have the problem.

Hi @singleview!

Welcome back to the AT&T Community Forums! I will be glad to show you how to stop the “sync in progress” from popping up. The AT&T Address Book is a pre-installed app that comes on AT&T phones, but it is optional if you want to use it or not. The reason that this is happening is because at some point, the app was opened or setup. You cannot delete the application, but you can disable it.

To get instructions on how to disable automatic sync for AT&T Address Book, please click here. You can also go to Google Play and make sure that it is not set up to “auto update”, just to make sure it doesn’t bother you in the future.

I hope this information helps, and please let us know if you have any other questions! Thanks again for contacting us, and have a great day!

I have been trying to follow your instructions, but they do NOT work:

  • the AT&T Address Book seems to be actively syncing (says "contacts are now syncing...") and he "Auto sync contacts" toggle canNOT be turned off. It's greyed out to on.
  • Google Play does not list "AT&T Address Book" so I am not sure how to turn off autoupdates.

Can you please help me??

The phone has already been factory reset once, and the autosync started on its own again and now is draining my battery so fast!

HELP!!!

Did you ever find a solution to this? Mine is doing the same exact thing and it is killing my battery!

Hi @singleview

Thank you for trying the steps that you have tried thus far. I do have a question in regards to what happened after you did the factory reset. When a factory reset is done, you are completing wiping the phone and it is going back to the factory settings.

Again, AT&T Address Book is completely optional. In order for it to start doing anything, it needs to be opened and set up. You mentioned that after you did the factory reset, nothing changed. Did you restore a backup to the phone afterwards? That may have loaded the issue right back up.

You can try to boot your phone into Safe Mode and see if you have the same issue.

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge screen.
  3. When "SAMSUNG" appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  7. Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.

You can try to do the factory reset again. If that doesn’t work, you may want to take the phone to the Device Support Center and have one of our techs check it out.

For more information on the Device Support Center, please click here.

Thank You.

I haven't figured out where the setting is to turn this off completely; however, I "force stop" mine with it comes up.

- Swipe down from the top so you can see the notification

- Press and hold the notification for "AT&T Address Book Sync in Progress"

- This pops up the "App Notifications" screen

- Click the "i" at the top right, the one that is in the circle

- This pulls up the Application Info screen

- click "Force Stop" and it will force the sync to stop then

Not a permanent fix but definitely shuts this down so it stops eating up battery

After you change the setting to turn it off instead of factory reset do a cache wipe instead. That's what I did last night.

This worked for my Galaxy S7.  What prompts the "Automatic sync" to restart?
