A circle with slash through it appeared on my notification bar and i don't know why or how to get if off

have you tired turning your phone off then back on to get it to connect with the tower?

This means you are not connected to a tower. These are several common icons and their meaning. You can find a full list in your phone manual (which you can find online...)

Some icons may look slightly different, but you get the idea.
