Where did all my space go?

I had been getting messages on my phone that there was an update of AT&T software for my Samsung Galaxy Express 3 Go Phone.  I had only 300 MB Internal storage free and it said I would need another 70 or so to install the update. So I deleted many apps and had a total of over 800 Mbytes free. I then did the AT&T upgrade. And now, without reinstalling any of the apps I deleted, the available storage is  barely at 200 MBytes. Where did all my storage go? It is like the old software files have not been removed.  This was 3 days ago.

Specifics of my phone

Android security patch level: May 1, 2017

      Kernel Version 3.10.9-7662162 Tues MAY 16 15:50:58 kst 2017

Hello @paulatcvs,

Thank you for reaching out on the Community Forums!  I can understand your worry, we use so our phones for so much making all storage space is precious.  I would be happy to help.

A great way to make room and refresh your device after an update is to clear the Cache Partition.  This will not clear out any personal information and only removes temporary data which may be clogging up the phone.

To access Android Recovery mode:

  1. Power off the device.
  2. Press and hold Volume Up + Home + Power.
  3. When the Samsung logo appears, release Power only. Continue pressing Volume Up and Home.
  4. Release all buttons when the Android System recovery appears.
  5. Using Volume Down, select (using Power button) wipe cache partition.

We have a great tutorial on how to free up space on our Device Support page as well.  Make sure your device is selected, and then go Tutorials > System & storage > Available memory.

I hope this information helps free space up on your device!  Please let us know if you have any further questions by replying in this thread.  Have a fantastic rest of your day!

I did the wipe cache as instructed and oddly enough my free space decreased by 50 megabytes or so.  But a few hours later the free space  magically had increased a few hundred mbytes.

Hello again @paulatcvs,

Thank you for attempting the steps I listed above! I am glad to hear they were able to help increase your storage. The temporary files stored in the cache can pertain to just about an application. Multiple apps saving information can add up very quickly.

If you do think there are files remaining from the previous software version, a factory reset will be our best bet to clear those out. Our Device Support Page I mentioned above will be able to help walk you through Backing up the device and Resetting the phone. To review backup options, you will head to Tutorials > Backup and Reset. For details on how to factory reset, you will head to Tutorials > Troubleshooting > Reset.

I hope this information helps!
