Warranty on cellphone

Sent a phone to the warranty and it was returned to me damaged. It was damaged in the mail and now I have to pay $702 for a phone that was perfect when I put in the mailbox. The warranty department said there is nothing I can do about the phone but to pay the phone charges. Someone in warranty department said I could file a claim with the USPS only problem now is that the package did not have insurance on it.  Now I am out the money for the broken phone as well as paying for the replacement phone. I can't make payment arrangements, they want the money and until then my phones are turned off until I can pay for the broken phone.  Has anyone ever had this happened and how did you resolve this matter; any help would be great.

Thanks.
