Unlocked Samsung Galaxy S7 Active seeking updates

I have an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S7 Active (G891A). It is currently updated to baseband version G891AUCS2BQH1, and cannot receive further updates because when checking for updates, it believes it is up to date. I gather from this thread [https://forums.att.com/t5/Android/Oreo-upgrade-unlocked-Samsung-Galaxy-s7/m-p/5566528#M107599] that I can only receive FOTA updates if I have an active AT&T SIM card.

My question is, if I go out and buy a prepaid AT&T SIM card and put it in my unlocked phone, will that be enough to get software updates? Do I need to enter a contract or something as well?

Hello @SGS7AQ!

In order for your phone to receive the latest FOTA update an active carrier SIM card is required to be installed on your device.

We hope this info helps!

Hello @SGS7AQ

Checking back on your original post (OP) and the included thread, to receive AT&T Software Updates you must have an AT&T branded device and active SIM card/plan.

If you unlocked device is an AT&T PREPAID branded device with an active AT&T PREPAID SIM and plan you will be able to receive software updates.

We hope this clarification helps!

@SGS7AQ

I see that you aren't a US resident. Are you in the US?

You must be connected to the AT&T network(in the US).

Thanks, but as I said in my OP, I knew that already. My question is, are there any other criteria that I have to meet?

Well spotted! I am not currently in the US, but I will be traveling there soon, and wanted to know if I would have an opportunity to update my (AT&T branded) phone while I'm there. So far it sounds hopeful.

Thanks for posting back.

When you arrive please visit an AT&T Retail location, which are often found close to all major ports of entry, to pick up an AT&T SIM.

Thank you very much for posting in AT&T Community Forums. Wishing your safe travels, and Happy Holiday Season!

When I check for updates, I receive a message that there are no updates available, but I am told that I need firmware updates. When I look in Sammobile for firmware updates for Samsung Active 7 G891A, I don't find any. Any ideas?

My question is how a person out of the US can update the phone ?

OTA upgrades won't work when you are out of the US or using a non AT&T SIM card. The only options are to send the phone to the US to get it upgraded by a friend, which likely isn't a feasible option for most people.

The only other option, other than OTA, is that on many phones it is often possible to sideload upgrades by downloading the upgrade to a computer and then using specialized software to apply to the phone. This is a procedure that's quite complicated and not supported by AT&T and you'll spend a lot of time trying to make it work. Also this process completely wipes the phone so it's not a very friendly upgrade process.
