SGH-I747 Galaxy S3 battery life issues

I have had my Galaxy S3 since the 6th and have been extremely disappointed with the battery life.  I purchased this phone to replace a Samsung Infuse.  With the exact same apps, gmail account, auto adjust brightness enabled, energy saving enabled on the S3, mail syncing in 5min intervals, screen timeout 1min...etc. - everything set the same as my Infuse.  I have been getting between 7-8hrs per charge on the S3 while I was getting 13-14hrs on the Infuse. I called Samsung Tech this morning and made the specialist note that during the 9 minute phone call I watched the battery fall from 55% down to 52% with the screen brightness on the lowest setting.  I know something is going on because I can leave the phone locked on my desk for an hour, pick it up and feel that the back/lower portion of the phone near the USB connector is warm.  If I do this side-by-side with my Infuse, the Infuse is cool/room temperature while the S3 is noticeably warm.

Everything about this phone is stellar, amazing, way beyond my expectations!!!!!  I am simply looking for a way to resolve this battery life issue as it seems like something is remaining "active" while the phone is on standby/locked.

Per the Samsung specialist, I removed my SD card from the phone, performed a factory reset and am currently charging it.  I will see if this helps the cause.

Please provide thoughts, suggestions...!!

Thank you.

From your description, you're making ur phone is using A LOT of power, which is why its draning so fast

How I fixed my battery problem, which now lasts almost a day and a half:

You should try JuiceDefender...the app from the Google Play store....it really helps make your battery last longer by controlling certain options on your phone automatically (such as mobile data when ur on wifi) and you dont notice any difference in performance on the phone...they have a free one, but the Plus version is worth it

Lower your screen brightness to about 10% instead of like 30% which people usually do...its still really bright at 10% and visible. DO NOT use Auto Brightness! That consumes a lot of power for it to constantly adjust

Dont have your email, weather or any widget check every 15 min for an update, that takes power...i have mine check every hour...u dont need to be reminded that frequently

Unfortunately this email account is for my workplace so I have to update in 5min intervals... I would actually benefit from push if GMAIL did it!

I will definitely try the 10% today to see what happens and research the app you suggested; I always had my Infuse on auto adjust so I will say that I am still disappointed if this is the cause of the issue.

Also, to update incase anyone reads this post in the future: I performed the factory reset per the Samsung techs instructions and removed my SD card. I am on 10hrs 7m of batter time, 56% standby according to the battery stats while I know based on the time I locked the phone and unlocked it this morning that it was officially in standby for 9hrs 5m of that time period.  So, seeing that it dropped from 100% to 87% in that time period... that seems better than I experienced in previous nights.

I'll update tjhis post again after two battery cycles.

Good deal! FYI, Auto-Brightness for any phone does take a lot of power and does consume battery..especially android phones

Resetting my battery did wonders for my battery drain problems.  I am very happy...but I keep my brightness at 24% 🙂

FYI: Update after one week of use.

After performing the factory reset I went through several menus and noticed that many settings were different from what they originally were when I received the phone.  No explanation as to why this occurred; maybe att settings vs. default samsung settings?

Anyway, the battery is averaging roughly 11hrs with my normal usage levels with ECO mode turned off, and the screen set to autobrightness again.  The phone has also never experienced the "hot" feeling that it did the first two days I owned it.  I am very happy now, but very unhappy that they ship the phone that way!?  Doesn't make sense to me.

Interstingly enough a coworker of mine had the same problem with his Galaxy, I heard him complain in the lunchroom and told him about what I went through... he reset his phone and his battery is lasting twice as long as it originally was.  Why????

Could you explain how the process of "resetting" the battery is carried out?

I've been with iPhone for the past 4 years and I finally decided to make the switch and now I get completely terrible battery life. I really like this phone but I can't even use it because it will barely last 10 hours and that's with my trying my hardest to make it last. I really don't wanna regret leaving iPhone.

I tried a hard reset like was mentioned in this thread and it didn't do anything for me except for delete the pictures I've taken. Today I left for work with a full battery and it was under 10% when I left 9 hours later. I used bluetooth to listen to Spotify for 15 minutes, other than that I didn't use any more bluetooth or wifi at all. I didn't have one single phone call and I didn't send or receive any texts at all and I didn't play any games. All I did was listen to Spotify for about an hour and a half and update 2 or 3 apps. I have the power save mode on, all syncing is off, brightness is down, auto bright is off, s voice wake up command is off, bluetooth is off, wifi is off, gps is off, all the normal power saving tricks.

This is extremely frustrating. Tomorrow I'm going back to the store I bought it from to see what they tell me. This is ridiculous.

Welcome to Androld lol...there are ways to make your phone last MUCH longer and you will be much more satisfied

Dont have your email, weather or any widget check every 15 min for an update, that takes power...i have mine check every hour...u dont need to be reminded that frequently

You should notice a BIG improvement in battery life
