Moto G4 not receiving Group MMS from Galaxy S6

I have an unlocked Moto G4 and LG Nexus 5. I have configured the default AT&T APN settings.

  • I can send and receive SMS messages to all users without a problem.
  • I can send and receive MMS messages to individual users without a problem.
  • I can send group messages without a problem.
  • I can receive group messages with a problem
    • When I am part of a group message I can send an receive noramlly except with my wife's AT&T Galaxy S6. Replies from her give me the error "couldn't download."
    • My wife can send and receive group text messages normally with all other users; as far as I can tell.

Please help, I have exhausted my efforts in researching this issue with no luck.

Hi @hapa papa!

My apologies for the trouble with receiving that Group Message. Having reliable communication is always important, especially with family!

Good work narrowing down the possible variables so far, this is essential to deducing the core issue.

Do you recall when this issue first originated? What troubleshooting have you tried so far? Is she receiving your messages in the group like normal?

There are a lot of general things you may try in our Troubleshooting Tool for Messages, however,  you may find them redundant if you’ve been digging into this matter for some time.

Please feel free to keep us updated on this matter. We want to work with you on this!

I appreciate you reaching out! Have an excellent day!

Thank you for getting back to me. I have had the phone for about a month now.

The first time I noticed the issue was this past weekend, but we have not had many reasons to group text on that timeframe.

So far I have soft reset all phones, reset and double checked the APN settings, played with the auto-retrieve MMS settings, and I disabled and uninstalled updates on the native messenger app. No luck still. I did install a third party app for texting, and that app works flawlessly.

My wife is receiving all messages normally.

Hi again @hapa papa!

Thanks for the information! You’ve done great so far!

It sounds like you’ve isolated it to the default application if the other one is working well. It also seems like you’ve already cleared the cache and data for it, but it didn’t seem to help which leaves us with little else we can troubleshoot as far as the application itself is concerned.

To clarify, this is happening on both devices, or is it working well on the Nexus 5?

We may want to consider a backup and factory reset next, as there are sometimes MMS/Group Message issues that only seem to resolve this way.

I appreciate the follow up, looking forward to hearing from you soon!

Hi Dementia, The issue is present on both phones. I have not installed the third party messaging app on the Nexus 5 yet as I was leaving it alone for testing purposes. The third party app is working great, I think I will just leave well enough alone for now. Thank you for helping me, I appreciate it.

@hapa papa

I have a moto x pure and I am having the same issues. My husband has a Samsung phone and is receiving my messages with no problems.

Can I ask what 3rd party app are you using??

Thanks
