If you've set the Facebook application to allow push notifications, you'll receive those notifications whether the app is open or not.
Open the Facebook app on your Android device.
Tap the "Facebook" logo in the upper-left corner of the screen, then press the "Menu" button.
Tap "Settings" on the screen, then check to see that the label under "Notifications" is "Active."
If it is, tap the checkbox to the left of Notifications to deselect it. Then press the back button.
After doing that, you should no longer receive Facebook notifications automatically. You'll have to open the application and "pull" the notifications to your phone.
