I am on a shared at&t account with my girlfriend. I want to get off that plan and have my own account. How do I do that?

It is actually a simple process. You need to do a transfer of billing responsibility! That will allow you to take your device and your phone number to your own account. The current account owner will need to call in to release the number than you can finish the process by accepting it. It is called transfer of billing responsibility!
