Galaxy S 3, plug in headphones starts media player--how to remove

I have a Galaxy S 3 with Android 4.1.2 .  Since the update to 4.1.2, whenever I plug headphones into the phone, the screen automatically jumps to a tab (a screen, a page?) all the way to the right which only has a media player on it.  This is extrememly annoying as I want to start an ap, such as my podcaster, that is on my home screen.  How can I disable this new (mis)behavior?
