Unlimited Plus Multi Line Text Messages

Switched to the new Unlimited Plus plan.  Plan summary and features indicate that the plan includes unlimited text messages for each "plan participant"; however, I have lost capability to send and receive text messages from my tablet.  Does not appear to be any problem receiving unsolicited AT&T messages, but nothing else. Is this feature somehow blocked in Unlimited Plus?

Thanks for the assistance Adrian.

It does look like my DataConnect plan changed sometime in the past from "DataConnect for Tablets 3GB" to "DataConnect 3GB for Tablets". The older plan did include text messaging (description from invoice below) and the new one does not mention it.

DataConnect for Tablets 3GB - Includes DataConnect for Tablets 3GB 3 gigabytes of domestic data usage, $10 per additional 1 gigabyte used, unlimited domestic data on the AT&T Wi-Fi Basic Network.
Messaging Unlimited - Includes Unlimited domestic text, picture, video and instant messages.
Pay Per Use Picture/Video Messaging - Includes $0.30 each domestic picture or video message.
Pay Per Use Text/Instant Messaging - Includes $0.20 each domestic text or instant message.

I was able to install the "AT&T Messaging for Tablet" app which did allow me to send and receive text messages on my tablet through my cell phone number via the Internet (messages.att.net).

I still wish that AT&T did not block text messages on tablets in their new plans and hope this could change in the future.

Greetings @BlvJohn,

This plan should allow you to call text and use data without any limits. I would be glad to clear up any problems you’re having!

Although tablets are data only devices, you can still text from them, however, it will need to adopt your smartphone’s mobile number to send/receive messages and place or receive calls. NumberSync does exactly this and is easy to setup! For a step by step guide on how to sync your devices, please click here.

In any case your tablet and phone is already NumberSync’d and are having problems with sending/receiving messages, please try powering both devices completely off and then back on again. Reseating the SIM card is also a quick and great way to fix messaging issues. Our Troubleshoot and Resolve Tool can also take care of what you’re experiencing. Before you get started, please be sure to select your device’s make and model!

I hope this helps, please let me know! Have a great day!

Thank you very much for your response.

Sounds like this will address my concerns and I will try it out. However, it appears to me on first glance that NumberSnyc will only allow me to use the tablet to send and receive messages via the phone number assigned to my phone. Am I correct in assuming it will not address issues related to sending and receiving messages via the phone number assigned to my tablet?

Hello again @BlvJohn!

This is correct; NumberSync does use the phone number of the device you are syncing it with. Numbers are generally assigned to tablets for billing purposes only. To text from a tablet, you can use NumberSync or AT&T Messages. Can you provide me with the model of tablet you’re using and the method you use to text on it?

With this information, I can look further into this for you. We want to ensure we answer your questions and concerns!

Hi Adrian:

Thanks again.  I think I will be fine with NumberSync. I rarely used my tablet for messaging (only when my phone was not available or miss-placed). Although NumberSync uses the smartphone number, I would presume it does not need the actual phone for messaging to work.

I am using an Android 4.4.4 tablet with the standard android messaging application (com.android.mms).  On my old DataConnect plan, SMS (using SMSC +13123149810) and MMS worked fine with the assigned phone number (APN = broadband). It is an AT&T HP TouchPad 4G.

Also, the tablet has no problem receiving AT&T messages using the assigned phone number 🙂

Hello again @BlvJohn!

Thank you again for responding! This type of device will actually not work with NumberSync. Since you were using the default messaging application, we have a few steps to try for resolving this.

Uninstalling and re-installing the application could help. To do this, navigate to your application manager, which is usually found in Settings. If you do not have the option to uninstall it, try Uninstall Updates, and clear the cache. Restart your device, and then test out messaging.

This could also be a provisioning issue. I will be sending you a private message shortly for more details. Please check your Forum’s Inbox for this!
